BGWTB is just behind Dirt for me as well. I do think AiC's newer albums get too much flak sometimes because it's not Layne and stuff like that. But I actually tend to prefer the doomier, sludgier sound that they've utilized more in their newer work. That said, Dirt is still the best album of course

"There’s nothing here that tops A Looking In View, Private Hell, and Black Gives Way to Blue imo.
And Your Decision and When the Sun Rose Again are way better acoustic cuts than Voices and Scalpel."
Truth.

A Looking in View is one of the best AiC songs ever... crazy how after Layne died their music got even doomier in parts, especially since the Layne years are usually considered the darkest musically

I think BGWTB had the benefit of being the best cuts of riffs and songs that Cantrell had written over the previous 7-8 years. There seemed to be creative tension during the recording of Tripod which led to its messiness. Cantrell wanted to write more riffy musically dark tunes while Layne wanted to go in a more alternative experimental and thematically dark direction. BGWTB is definitely more of a metal album and less weird than Tripod, but songs like Looking in View and Private Hell are top notch regardless of era.

For sure. Not to mention, the title track is one of the best ballads they ever did as well. Gotta love Sir Elton John's piano and backing vox :]

Title track is heart wrenching, but not necessarily because it's one of their best songs. Private Hell on the other hand...

These post-Tripod albums really emphasize how essential Jerry Cantrell is to the band’s sound. As much as Layne was, if not more in some cases.

that and his solo albums. I would never diss Layne, he’s probably my favorite vocalist of all time. But without Jerry this band is nothing.
