And the reason this isn't nearly as good as Axe to Fall is that it lacks a "Dark Horse" and a "Wretched World", two prime examples of how Converge do business. Like I said, this is more or less business as usual which doesn't mean bad, but lacks anything that stands out and my word, Axe to Fall and everything before it did have standout tracks. Also means if you have this rated above a 3.5, you're fanboying it.
I'm sorry, but I must have missed where Wretched World was a 'prime example of how Converge do business.'

Anyone who thinks the production on this is bad isn't listening through a good sound source. Buy some good headphones and enjoy.

It's like their perfect brand of slow-grinding hardcore and I fucking love the way it ends the album.

Hmm I actually found this album to have several standout tracks, like Coral Blue, Vicious Muse, Aimless Arrow too mention a few tracks that aren't just standard Converge. What do you think about these tracks?
The only thing that people are praising that I don't care much for is the title track. It is nice and a bit different from what Converge usually do, but it doesn't affect me like a lot of the other tracks do

Initial listen is 3.5. It didn't feel special, but it is solid for sure.

theyre excellent but far from how 'converge do business'. them doing business is on trespasses and sparow's fall - in other words, ripping you a new fucking asshole.

Their earlier work is a fun nostalgic listen but not really great by any means. Long Live and One Wing are their best material but its interesting to hear how much they progressed over the years. They still put on one of the best shows I've ever seen.

comments like "if you have this rated above a 3.5, you're fanboying it" are fucking retarded and only an idiot would say that.

this isn't trying to be axe to fall, there just isn't the same relentless aggression. this record clearly (to me at least) sees the band pushing their basic sound in several new directions, something they couldn't have done on the more focused albums they released in the past. this will mean a mixed bag for some listeners who can't get into some of the styles they fuck with here, but for others there is plenty to enjoy in hearing the band having fun with their music like never before. is it going to live up to their more innovative classic material? of course not, but there's something to be said for a metalcore band that can still bring the pain and keep it fresh this far into a lengthy career.
