johnny i don’t know how to explain this to you but dynamics can be expressed through any instrument. which ties in to the point i’m making. drums don’t really provide anything that can’t be provided in some way by other instruments. the opposite is not true. this is why there is plenty of great music without drums and virtually no great music that is just drums. if you knew how to express dynamics with an instrument you would perhaps be capable of playing one

I feel like if you think drums take on a melodic quality when tapped on in weird ways in free improv then you probably agree drums are fundamentally melodic in some sense, even though it's also worth distinguishing from guitars and pianos and stuff in terms of possessing melody
