as far as this type of music goes he's one of the better producers

Of course that means nothing in the grand scheme of things

Yeah definitely. I got a friend into some of the heavier dubstep I like, stuff like heavier skream, benga, coki, n-type, some HENCH stuff, reso, etc., and he was really digging it, but never liked the deep stuff (thought it was boring), but I always thought I would be able to get him into it eventually. He really liked listening to that kind of stuff for the bass weight I think. But the more he listened to dubstep and got into it himself the more he would start just listening to poppier and cheesier stuff and now he listens to the absolute worst electronic music. Skrillex, Avicii, Knife Party, you fuckin name it. Can't believe I let that happen.

I'm basically the opposite of that haha. I started out thinking "ZOMG SKIRLLZ" and then something along the lines of "ZOMG KNFI PRTY" and now I love that kind of heavier stuff. Snarled is such a great tune, plus HENCH is becoming one of my favorite labels (although it's not quite there yet).

Yeah I like Skream's deeper stuff more but sometimes I need to throw on some heavy stuff, speaking of which Skreamizm 7 is full of it (only a fan of a couple though). Best thing on that release is Copy Cat which rules.

Hench is a grab bag for me though, sometimes it's pretty great but there are a lot of times where I think a release from them is complete trash. My schedule works out that I usually end up listening to Rinse when N-Type is on every tues though. I like the style he mixes, nice balance of deep/dark and heavy.

I don't even know Avicii and Knife Party. I'm pretty damn good at avoiding awful stuff that's popular.

Eh, it was rather the opposite with me. I started with some 'heavier stuff' until I noticed - like - after 3 days that a lot of that stuff can be monotonous as fuck. Then I discovered some sweet stuff like Phaeleh, Deep Medi and such. Although it actually goes the same with DnB for me, I can't stand this incredibly formulaic recycled stuff with no nuances at all. That's the problem with some of the heavy stuff, it's heavy for the sake of being heavy. There are no nuances or subtleties or even structural changes.

I mean if you can achieve the monotony of the beat of a LMFAO song well.. yeah.

knife party is what resulted when a couple of producers decided to abandon their great dnb band and to start writing awful music

Knife Party isn't that bad. Just painfully mediocre, fun music.

@Wolf yeah a lot of it abandons any nuance or complexity but what really fucking turns me off most of it is how formulaic it is. Like any time I hear a build into a drop like this (almost every popular brostep/electro track these days):

http://youtu.be/SyORw8bee4o?t=57s

double drum tempo, double again, double again, 4th time optional, cut everything, cliche vocal sample (mention of "bass" optional but highly desirable).

I immediately just hate it unless it's exceptional otherwise (but it probably isn't). The number of songs that is used in is fucking absurd, it's like literally every popular brostep track. I just don't see how people can be okay with listening to the exact same thing over and over again.

@brostep don't think I've heard it, link me a track?

Also tbh Acid Wolfpack was surprisingly refreshing and almost "new." I mean now that I think about it you're right, the drop is very formulaic, but otherwise it's probably the fact it actually keeps some sort of complex, not-excessively-wobbly melody throughout the entire piece that sets it apart. I'd put it on a list of top 25 or so EDM songs of 2012.

Hmm that could be a decent track but the "yip yip yip" (even though I love those guys) is way too gimmicky - makes it impossible for me to take the track seriously.

Yeah I definitely don't mind the rest of that track, it's a nice listen in a fun cheesy melodic way.

You just basically described what I feel about basically every or almost every brostep playlist. Or generally quite a number of party playlists, they're just so fucking repetetive it makes my ears bleed. I mean there's enough stuff that's accessible and high power without being monotonous as hell, or people could just work a bit more genre diversity in those playlists.

I mean we once went from Andrew W.K. to Lonely Island.

that packaging actually looks pretty cool but skrillex on vinyl is kind of a weird concept. wonder how many skrillex fans would actually be interested in it

I'm actually really wondering if I could resell that to dumb fans for a shitload after it sells out.
