"but he has done something about it, that's the point of the album and the my whole argument here. he used to be a victim, "broken man" kind of guy, but he smartened up. it's a story of overcoming those lazy thoughts and taking control of your own life."
Interesting perspective, I think I'll relisten with that in mind.
"this is the part where i don't agree. striving is just as admirable as overcoming."
I wasn't meaning to say that he's striving and that I think striving is worthless (pretty much the polar opposite of what I think) it just seemed like there wasn't even striving. I mean can be fully aware that I'm living a miserable live and not strive to do anything - for example because of mental barriers - thinking that I'm not in control and things of the like.
"but he has not and never will be rid of his past. even the last line of the album is self-doubtful and self-destructive."
I'm not so sure about that, to progress forward you need to be able to forget or disregard the past to a certain extent so you don't expose yourself to a certain bias. (in this case mostly negative)
Then again, I also think psychologically and socially how we evaluate and treat the past is pretty skewed.

Just saw that my opinion was being discounted as "sputnik hivemind." I learned about this guy from a local newspaper who named him Detroit Entertainer of the Year. I like this album because the lyrics are pretty damn incredible and Danny's flow is entertaining as hell, not because Recspecs and Rosa brainwashed me. Also, 'so classic' was referring to the strings of songs, not the album as a whole.
