I really don't get the obsession with the guitar tone on this, It's pretty run-of-the-mill dm

It wasn't run of the mill when it came out. At the Gates and many others based their careers on this tone. The "buzzsaw" on this record was the basis of the original Swedish death metal sound (pre Gothenburg/melodeath revolution).

When I say original Swedish death metal I mean Entombed, Dismember, old At the Gates/Grotesque, Nihilist, etc.

Yeah, I'm sure this was definitely somewhat original sounding when it came out.
I just don't really care about this album anyways, kinda bores me

Nice Flug. The guitar textures are phenomenal for music of this kind. They kind of "glide" through the entire album.
