Of course you would say that. But then again, I couldn't care less where the music comes from.

"if i wanted to listen to listen to inane tedious bullshit i'd listen to my dad when he watches the news"
Now THAT is a good analogy. Although I still don't understand what our parent's generation doesn't get about certain concepts. (even if you explain it to them like 3 times)

true though people do seem to be stuck in bizarre microcosms when it comes to music. like, we avoid it cos we all visit sputnikmusic.com but I listen to way more american music than most people I know

Probably, I mean the time we spent just talking about, listening to and doing whatnot that has to do with music is probably waaaaaaaaaaaaaay beyond what the average listener would spend in related affairs.

@Feather: Well, no shit. I also wouldn't call it "falling apart" (too jeremiad-esque, also pretty vague)

idk man. maybe you just get so stuck in your worldviews and anti-youth bias cos "lololol of course you're a little socialist lolol". it's like they don't realise they're fulfilling the other side of the cliché

try explaining to them that there's no firm evidence showing this or that and they'll just say "well they would say that" ok mum i'm leaving home now so i can smoke weed and chill with my arab homies in peace

like my dad rents out property and claims he gets most of his money trouble from black people but the

idea that maybe that isn't because all africans are hardwired to swindle their way into his bank

account just doesn't compute after 30 years of interpreting it that way cos he's never considered it

any other way

i mean what's science

The dumb thing is that literally every academic of the same generation (or older ones for that matter) I've ever interacted with is different in that regard. Lawyers, bankers, teachers, businessmen - none of them have the same preconceived bullshit stuck so deep up in their head like some of the others have. Like, my parents partially still believe that Germany (a country that can literally not sustain itself economically) could've handled a deflation of epic proportions properly.

They also believe the whole "EHMAGERD IMMIGRANTS ARE GONNA TAKE OVER THE COUNTRY!" and it's like "jesus christ, the highest estimates go up to 12% including illegals" (not to mention all the shit they partly have to put up with despite relatively progressive laws on that front)

I mean I've run into problems with immigrants, too. I grew up with them, we beat each other partially on a daily basis. But I still don't go around assuming the majority of them is incompetent or criminal.

really wonder how a representative democracy can work properly when people aren't informed enough to know what they're actually voting for or how their own country actually works

could be a generational thing and views being passed down from parent to child but i wonder how much the media has to do with it. cultivate a culture of fear and stupid people just re-enforce it with confirmation bias in their own lives

i think i heard my father once say, after meeting a black guy he really got on with, "oh he was just a white guy in black skin"

idk how you fight that mentality. they've constructed such a solid worldview in their mind over the years that if you were to take it apart it would just blow their minds

he was saying something this morning about germans lol. only caught part of it cos i was still in bed

half asleep but it was in response to some article about something bad some germans had done and he

was saying "i thought the germans were meant to be a chivalrous race but look at this blah blah the

world is topsy turvy and fucked" and it's like yeah the world isn't as simple as you try to make it or

how you made it before you had wikipedia to tell you how shit goes

i don't get how someone who managed to break through their parents poverty to become such a successful and self made businessman can be so stupid when it comes to other stuff

"really wonder how a representative democracy can work properly when people aren't informed enough to know what they're actually voting for or how their own country actually works"
Well, our modern democracies are primarily based on two principles (apart from the whole equal participation bit), "competence compensation" (from above, i.e. parties and political figures) and the idea of the "responsible citizen" (responsible in the sense of Kant's "Mündigkeit", the whole Enlightenment shtick)

Obviously these are very ideal concepts that often deviate from reality. Then we have the whole bag of tricks that is rhetorics and manipulation and specific historical context. (e.g. economic downslopes in which fringe groups get popular)

"could be a generational thing and views being passed down from parent to child but i wonder how much the media has to do with it. cultivate a culture of fear and stupid people just re-enforce it with confirmation bias in their own lives"
Lots of factors, including all you just mentioned.

"i think i heard my father once say, after meeting a black guy he really got on with, "oh he was just a white guy in black skin""
My father once started going on a rant about immigrants while sitting next to his Russian wife, his Russian step-daughter, her boyfriend, my brother and me. Go figure. (it's even worse considering the whole "freeloader"-rhetoric is pretty much textbook Nazi rhetoric - literally)

"idk how you fight that mentality. they've constructed such a solid worldview in their mind over the years that if you were to take it apart it would just blow their minds"
I honestly think there's almost no way to fight this - or at least none that doesn't require shitloads of patience and slow as a mule progress. I mean a lot of these people are pretty much as "static" as the catholic church at that point.

"i don't get how someone who managed to break through their parents poverty to become such a successful and self made businessman can be so stupid when it comes to other stuff"
Holy shit yes. I mean my father is by no means stupid, he's skilled in his field and he's not uneducated, either but when it comes to that specific issue it's like you're talking to prepubescent teen who's insisting that nobody understands him.

Dude, we're talking about our families - not the countries in general.

Also, did you seriously think that the U.S. is the only country with racism and the likes still in existence? Also, please knock off the binary simplicism. The reality doesn't work in shiny binary frameworks - even if your high school history books might have told you so.

@fish: Ugh, sounds like our Bavarians. I hate that kind of separationist bullshit "I'M FRANCONIAN!" "so.. Bavarian?" "NO, FRANCONIAN!" "Franconia is in Bavaria." "SHUT THE FUCK UP!"
Irish name? Is it something with "O" or "Mc"?

Also²: this may be off-topic but at least it's somewhat constructive, especially for Sputnik.
