Haha yeah. It almost sounds tongue-in-cheek until you actually listen to their music and realize that the tag fits pretty damn well

Guys, I accidentally brought the average down. Think this could be a grower so hopefully I’ll raise it back up again eventually. Some outstanding moments here.

True that. Wayfarer is one of the most strangely beautiful songs I've ever heard.

"meanwhile half their discography is underrated af"
blue lambency and coyote are underrated for sure
dowsing and hubardo get plenty of love, they just live in the shadow of this

Their discography is pretty hit-and-miss, especially the middle albums, but they're all good. The sput album averages are pretty accurate, except Plastic House could be a bit higher.

"The sput album averages are pretty accurate"
eeeeeh it depends how you look at it but im not realy interested in derailing this discussion into the merits (and especially failings) of numeric rating systems on the internet and the wrong ways that they are used which only serve to reinforce the desire to use them wrongly

this is a cool band and as always i wish people gave more of their stuff a chance

I mean in relation to how album ratings work overall, like the highest rated album is 4.65 so that requires adjustment.
Generally I think about it this way in terms of the site's album ratings consensus:
4.4-4.6=classic, 5/5
4.2-4.3=4.5+
4.0-4.1=4.1-4.4
3.8-3.9=very broad, 3.8-4.3
3.5-3.8=3.7-4.0
and so on.
|
| |
its not linear though, nor strictly positive
like what you'll notice on any site anywhere similar to this with enough users is that while indeed the higher echelons get underrated, a lot of trash gets super overrated too, which not only makes normalizing basically impossible but also leads to the general perception that an album thats merely like a 3.2 is not worth your time even though it should literally mean GOOD, because there are bad albums out there which are inexplicably rated like 3.4, etc.
anyway this is an exercise in futility sadly

I think my rating scale works for albums with 4+ averages but I agree that the 3 range is more vague, maybe because it's more middle-of-the-road. It's like with Rotten Tomatoes, movies with 40-60% scores are seen as mediocre, but there are plenty of fantastic movies with those scores, as well as shitty ones. I think that kind of range can also mean polarizing just as much as mediocre. The 3 range on this site fits that description generally.

album is meh, too weird. no time for the nonsense

at least RT lists critic aggregate score and user aggregate score separately, although even that can be treacherous when it comes to unearthing hidden gems

I know opinions are just opinions but its cool sometimes to see someones rating for certain albums and know not to listen to anything they ever say again.
