“Never been a fan of this one”
I’m very surprised by this coming from you To be honest. I know we haven’t interacted a ton on the site but I know you know your jazz. Figured you’d love this

I essentially stop liking much jazz at all after 1970, very purist with it. I really like In A Silent Way but somehow the vibe on this is just mushy and boring to me. the two-drummers approach becomes especially bothersome

Wow, wasn't expecting Robertsona being unimpressed by this like that.
Tbh most of my fav jazz records are from the 1955-1975 period, but there are many gems after that for my ears too, specially in the Vocal Jazz department.
PS: In a Silent Way is my second fav Miles and one of the greatest jazz albums of all time imho.

it’s one of those records that can’t withstand the weight of its reputation. it’s been the genre tourist’s introduction to jazz for a long time and because of that it’s got an artificially inflated critical appraisal. for my money every one of the Hancock fusions are significantly better than this, even though I do still like it.
hell I’d even take dark magus and aghartha over this one.

WHAT?! Completely disagree Hyp. This album is one of the most important pieces of music ever recorded. It changed a whole genre of music forever and opened so many paths... I enjoy Hancock, some albums almost as much as this, but nothing in the fusion realm has the vibe, musicianship and overall feeling of this.
Unparalelled masterpiece

Both albums are very different from each other, however, they are masterpieces that fit different moods.

And I typically gravitate toward that mood so it’s surprising to me I haven’t clicked with it heavily
