Watershed is a transitional album because it has some heavy 70s prog elements. MAYH doesn't have much of that, maybe the few black metal influences are hints to Orchid or Morningrise, but it isn't much more

yeah, there are a lot of purely musical traits on MAYH that I would say are weaker than a lot of their other output but I absolutely think it's their most atmospheric and emotionally involving record if you give it your time.

I love the production on MAYH too, really airy in the more atmospheric moments but has a great mix of raw/punchy on the heavier moments.

That's mainly what I was alluding to, it could therefore be considered a transition of sorts - admittedly there's more emphasis on what was to come, than what had gone before.
