Yeah park pretty much said it. The difference in quality is huge, production is one of the worst ever and half the songs sounds almost the same

Come Clarity is the only album worth a damn after this one imo.

It was my first IF album so of course I have nostalgia-based bias. But I still can't believe how Colony to Clayman was a huge stylistic shift (avg 4.1 and 4) and then Reroute, pretty much a continuation of the Clayman sound, drops to 3.4 here. But again, nostalgia goggles I guess.

I love everything up to and including Come Clarity but they should’ve called it quits after that lol.

Colony to Clayman most certainly isn't a bigger shift than this to RTR. That record shared a lot of ideas with this that they hadn't experimented with before. I'd agree if you told me Whoracle-Colony since they started to focus more on melodies than riffs, but Colony-Clayman? No way.

The b-sides album released after Sense of Purpose was pretty great, actually.

idk kusangii, I don't notice a very big difference from Whoracle to Colony. The guitars were still shredding regularly, but then in Clayman they scaled back the technicality and did a lot more chugga chuggin' and added a lot of synth

Sense of Purpose is decent I guess yeah but after that especially blowz.

like think about Pinball Map, that chorus is 100% different from anything they had done prior. They really committed to the melodic side with this record

Sure, but RTR also has more moments that hadn't been done before. Pretty much every chorus is vocal-oriented which isn't the case here.

"
Oof that's almost objectively wrong. Trigger, Cloud Connected, Free Fall, Metaphor, Dawn of a New Day are all great songs. I can see someone not liking them if they want more melodeath, but still super memorable songs. Metaphor is the best soft song they've written"
tfw a teenager is calling me objectively wrong when ive been listening to metal since he wasnt even aliev
nope, cloud connected is ass, metaphor and dawn of a new day are meh

cloud connected is a terrible song, but one that young new fans somehow enjoy
like metallica's "the day that never comes" or something, ugh

Yeah it gets more shit than it deserves. There are some pretty decent tracks on that one. March to the shore and condemned are both pretty solid

Just revisited this album again today. I don't really listen to In Flames a lot but this is definitely my favorite one of the ones I've heard.
