Those albums are definitely heavier, debatably better, considering when you entered the band, personal taste etc...
For me this album starts to really shine, when you start taking it for what it is (unlike Gore f.e.)...a beast of its own imo...although yes, Deftones all the way.
First few tracks that started really clicking for me was that middle section between Spell of Math and Link is Dead. All the other tracks came to grow on me after.

if it wasn't for Pompeji I would consider 5ing this. the last 4 songs are top notch Deftones - especially TLID which reminds of s/t and When Girls Telephone Boys in particular. title track is also sweet but it is still weird as a closer.
