For me Jeff Mangum is akin to Avey Tare or the guy from Silver Mt Zion. Their voices are hardly gentle, but they convey enormous amounts of emotion, so much that they buckle and break.
Are they technically good singers? No.
Are they nasal and whiney? Absolutely.
Do their voices rake across your heartstrings, and sting your soul like salt water? If you let them.

Yeah, I'm essentially a robot then, emotion is secondary when my ears are telling me to make it stop.
Another gripe... can anyone explain why these guys have such a god-awful & nonsensical name? I'm assuming it means something, perhaps not though.

Not as far as I know. Or care. I think it's one of those "cellar door" cases where certain words in conjunction just sound good or feel right. I don't think they chose it to proclaim artistry or zaniness or anything.
