Diamond Eyes and Koi (and this, to a lesser extent) still had great riffs tho, I think the only record that went really overboard with the shug bullshit was Ohms, and even then everything else about it was so good that I didn’t really mind it

Stephen’s guitarwork has always been background for me for the most part anyways. It’s there to provide support for literally everything else that’s far more interesting

The Morrisey comment extended beyond the lyrics and singing style and more to do with guitar writing for the album. Chino wanted to incorporate more melodic/less metal riffs against Carpenter's desire to increase string count and decrease the tone.

A blend of Deftones and Meshuggah, if done properly, would absolutely rule.

I mean tbh I’d say that’s just Ohms. It’s not hyper technical like shug but it’s got the mega downtuned semi angular djent riffs in spades along with Chino and Frank doing their thing.

When I think about it, I guess you are right. I am more fond of Ohms than Gore.

As much as I really don’t care for a lot of Djent guitarisms Urantia has such a killer main riff. Honestly one of Stephen’s best.

In general, I think Stephen has written a lot of great riffs. His style is relatively unique and he takes a lot of consideration of space and execution without relying on technicality alone.

Acid Hologram still rules
I tried so hard with this album but its weird production always held it back from ascending to into mid tier Deftones
