I think melon will give it a strong 5 to light 6 if he’s feeling generous

At least the man hasn't lost his prog game

I'm placing my bet on a light 6 from Melon

after a few listens, Pneuma is easily the best song on the new rec. maynard's melodies are fantastic and musically the track is utter fire. those drum fills should come with a goddamn health warning

Invincible into Descending is prolly the best half hour this band has done, and that goddamn 7empest isnt bad either

Pneuma is god-mode, especially that second half when Carey comes in like Godzilla and wrecks house.

Just started listening to the album a bit ago, finished Pneuma. Music is honestly really great on both of the first couple of tracks but Maynard is really underwhelming. What a let down vocally. Has he lost his vocal power or is this just a stylistic choice?

I also strongly assumed that he would do a very, very safe performance on this record. Too bad i wasn't wrong

I think it's a stylistic choice. He took a similar stand on the latest APC. Breathy, mid range melodies, which sound great honestly, and I understand why he would choose that direction, but damn I miss angry Maynard.

It's probably both. The guy is 55.

Ah, finally listened.
Pros: band is good, mix is refreshing, direction somewhat new, some really good sections
Cons: double-edged sword with Maynard giving the band more space, songwriting is non-existent outside of music theory, last interlude is pure shit.

"It's probably both. The guy is 55."
That's what I meant.

Maynard sounds so ghostly on the new record. I wish he would let loose every now and then, portray some good old fashioned Tool aggression.

But on the bright side, Tool records and tours so sporadically that hopefully Danny Carey won't suffer from the tendinitis issues that Neil Peart did.
It also makes me said that we've gotten to the point where we I worry about that sort of stuff. Where did the years go... :/

I didn't want angry Maynard, i just wanted to hear some incredible A4,Bb4, B4 full voice vocals like he did them on all the Tool and APC albums until 2006.
He still can hit those live (while ofc he has to give it his all these days), so why not at least give us some big moments?
His mid range isn't all that interesting to me
In this video some of the greatest high pitch notes are included: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PqroLQ1kMQc
None of that is on the new record

Why he decided to play it so safe is beyond me. Just didn't feel like taking the risk? Just doesn't have that passion anymore?

He probably didn't put those on the record even if he can because he knows he'll have to go out every night and replicate it live and he didn't want to put himself in that position.
