@juiceviaorange Try to get your hands on the original release of Diamond Eyes on itunes or rip from the cd directly. Then download the current version available on itunes (torrent that shit, don't buy) and compare them on Audacity or Goldwave. These remasters are victims of dynamic range compression and therefore are unlisteanable to me.

It's even worse on Spotify since, as I understand, all the albums there are ~160 kps mp3's. I decided long ago to keep relying on cd quality rather than streaming.

Quality on Spotify is default to 160 if you're not paying for the service. Simple as that. You can choose your streaming quality if you pay. I crank that as high as it can go. You can also set volume levels to preserve dynamics, instead of having Spotify crank it up.

Is it just me or is Koi No Yokan criminally underappreciated? I decided to listen to it again after having Ohms on repeat for a week and I still weep that not more people talk about how good it is.

Oh, and Ohms is still a banger no matter how many times I relisten to it.

Didn't know this but still I'm 100% positive the album versions uploaded on Spotify are the 2016 remasters. Doesn't matter the volume levels you choose you will still have compression in any dynamics channel. I'd say stick to the cd versions with Deftones at least.

The last line of Radient City hits just as hard as the end of Hexagram.

"Nah, the albums available on streaming platforms (spotify, itunes, google music, etc) are the 2016 remasters and not the cd versions. I have SNW, White Pony, self titled, Diamond Eyes and ATF on cd and also I downloaded the whole discography on itunes before they updated to the garbage remasters. White Pony and Diamond Eyes, in particular, are pretty much unlistenable on those versions."

Eh the original CDs were already not acceptable imo, especially from WP onwards, even though they followed the industry norm (which starting from the 90s got disgusting to begin with). I found a limited red case of White Pony and it just blows. Good news the music slaps though!

However you are indeed right about the even worse digital reissues. On one hand you can find that sweet KNY, but on the other Diamond Eyes went from DR6 to DR5 which doesn't sound like a lot, but if you go looking into the songs you'll see that the title track for example went from DR6 to DR3 (the fuck? literally Death Magnetic).

"Their 'sound' isn't the most articulate, detailed thing to begin with. It's always felt very hazy and distorted. I'm not listening to Steven Wilson here."

Don't make that mistake, a dirty sound isn't an excuse. My Bloody Valentine would sound so much worse if they didn't have decent dynamics to support the distortion. Btw I disagree, seems to me that Deftones always have a very layered sound.
