Why has to be my least favorite on here it's so on-the-nose and hysterical like being homeless is terrible yes, but having some dude scream "HAVE YOU EVER HAD SCABIES" isn't adding anything to that perspective and is just comical

Tbf that is the exact point. I greatly appreciate that it's not shrouded in some metaphorical bullshit. It's not something entirely new to what is terrible about homelessness, but tbf what more can you say that isn't already known?

'I greatly appreciate that it's not shrouded in some metaphorical bullshit.'

Yeah I made this point earlier, direct and 'obvious' lyricism isn't inherently bad. I don't understand the criticism.

top 3-ish song here, probably

I mean, name one other anti-homelessness song that paints a better picture

you drive through baltimore and mfers will come up to your car and literally bang on your windows begging for money. they'll even come up to you at a light, wash your windshield without your consent, and then demand you pay them. sometimes even in groups. 'why' is like a perfect distillation of that almost manic desperation.

It was a joke

But

Serious chat: homelessness you learn from reading, a documentary, interacting with the homeless

Neither song taught me anything I didn’t already know about homelessness

yet i'm sure everyone else here is grateful that the two in conjunction gave you the perfect opportunity to impart how much you've read about homelessness
as opposed to music, that well acknowledged source of informative content

Johnny my point was I don’t think it majorly ‘paints a better picture’ (more effective message) than loads of other songs about homelessness

It’s another song about homelessness and the message is always welcome to bring light on the subject but it’s just a song that yes is very direct but yup

dunno, i think it being a song about homelessness that people are actively discussing as a song about homelessness would suggest it's done its work. no need to get competitive over that (and yes, we get you were alive for Pearl Jam)

You know I meet so many people who think their lives totally shield them from the idea of becoming homeless but I’m a firm believer that anyone working or middle class is maybe three life events away from being on the street

Above that maybe more shielded but who knows

You’d be surprised how many people don’t share that perspective, even after what’s going on in Ukraine this year. Always been quite fascinated by the subject and there was a big shift in the UK from people giving money to the homeless and now fearing that’s just fuelling criminality and trying to give food/water instead etc. it’s changed a lot, but still the number of homeless at least keeps apace with population rise.
