Need to give this a listen; hopefully it feels more like CTS than their more recent releases.

Is it just me or does Brann finally sound like Brann again?

It fundamentally changes how the band sounds when he's on like this.

I also have to give Troy (and Brent to an extent) props. His vocals have come a long fucking way.

"The "double album marketing" is not enough to convince me that Mastodon are confident of themselves and their ability to write exciting music anymore."

I follow them on Facebook and honestly I didn't realize this was a double album until release date which was, of course, a great surprise for me. If anything, they undersold that or maybe I'm just too distracted. Whatever the case, this double LP is incredible start to finish I think there are no weak songs here. I would just move "Sickle and Peace" as the last track of the first half. I think it flows better that way and it works more as a closer.

This is the only place I've even seen this referred to as a double album. I don't think they marketed that aspect very well unless I'm also too distracted which is possible.

Huh...if it's a double album I think they should have separated it as such. Kind of like how maudlin of the Well wrote two albums, but it's considered as one total album (Bath/Leaving Your Body Map). Does anyone know when the first section of the album is supposed to end? Maybe I can listen to it like that, and enjoy it a bit more. I'm assuming one album is supposed to be "Hush" and the other "Grim"

--I don't think they even print those cards--

An idea for the new year perhaps? I'm sure some of the staff/contribs could come up with some categories and a chart randomizer?

Lol I'm sure the staff have more important things to do. Contribs, sure ;-)

What are the Vegas odds for Taylor Swift and Yellowcard doing a split EP and me giving it a 2.5? So many unlikely possibilities...

Wait. Dewi said we mostly just sit in the break room eating biscuits and refreshing the coffee in the machine all day?

Slightly higher now that you've mentioned it's already on your mind. Unsure if you're allowed to put a tenner on something you technically control, hmmmm. I would consider a category of: "Johnny stirring the Facebook page up with hate comments from Brazil" or "Dev reappears, reviews that one house album no-one's heard of and disappears again" or "Jom takes a minute from correcting everyone's failed [not jpeg] image submits to review a Hilltop Hoods album"

This is pretty great. Mastodon has fallen hard off my listening radar in the last few years, but this has sparked my interest in the band again. Right now, I'd say this definitely ranks behind Crack The Skye but is in a similar range to Leviathan and Once More 'Round The Sun as contenders for my second favorite (I know OMRTS isn't a popular pick).

It’s pretty good. Easily my least favorite Mastodon though. Idk

Album is a grower but it made me go back and listen to Leviathan and Blood Mountain and man I miss when these guys just wrote fucking riffs.

Yeah after one listen this is solid but pales in comparison to BM and CtS

Those old albums are still there to be enjoyed. I've always said that I have zero expectations about bands with a certain history repeating stuff they've already done.

I want to see progression or at least lateral movement to new things, as long as they don't betray what they fundamentally are.

I don't think these guys have ever done a bad album, while at the same time they never really repeated themselves. I'm not big on The Hunter or Once More Round The Sun, but they aren't a stain on their name and they are all honest albums. I really can't think of that many bands with this longevity, that I can say the same things about. And this is a record that still opens a world of possibilities for their next steps.
