Nice discussion mates, enjoyed reading that.
My initial point with the whole hypebeast thing was sort of what Myth surmised with this:
"I like how Nightbringer is framing his arguments with rationality, but his arguments could also apply to non-rational ratings (well, non-rational in the way he explains rationality).
(...)
Take into account the communal feeling and ''hype-trains'' and there you have it, ''irrational'' ratings based more on feeling connected to the rest and sharing some popular opinions (nothing bad with that per se), and average scores gain immense importance. It's even easier to be hasty when there's so much music coming out and there's no time to invest in everything. Some are filtered out this way."
Basically I believe reviews and opinions of other users (should you deem their opinion noteworthy) can and do influence the average and even the not-so-average consumer ultimately.
Do I have proof? No, but I'm pretty sure that you could get a lot of people, even on this site where people are "proud" of their opinions, to admit that they're occasionally swayed by mentioned factors. Also I believe forming opinions and your own taste varies between users based on the amount of music they're exposed to daily, and how many years you've spent actively listening to music. Not everyone has to be at the same point of their "musical maturity" and have the same confidence in their opinion and that can lead to rating stuff based on the consensus if you yourself are not entirely sure what to think of something.
Now in this particular case, I'm not blaming Divergent for 3ing and the other commenters for 2ing Fortitude, I'm just saying there's more to this than meets the eye, at least to me, and the review will probably influence the average in the end, but nobody has to care ultimately. I just sometimes find myself caring about an album and a band I like. Especially if their last album was a dud in my eyes, I love a good comeback.

"Believe it or not, people really care for averages on this site and base their opinion off of it."
I don't trust ratings that much on this site, but sometimes it can spark interest on me whether it's a low or high average, for example, people shit on Bathory's Octagon over here and i see why (awful production and questionable perfomance at times), but i still think it kinda rips (interesting songwriting), rates can mean different things for each album just based on your own tastes

My thoughts as well. It's a slippery slope with this argument that could easily lead to someone asking: so what? Bad reviews shouldn't be a thing because people pay too much attention? Definitely no, but as others have already pointed out, I'd be hesitant to publish a review so soon. I've got nothing against Divergent, and I agree with his review a lot. I'm just thinking publicly.

a lot of those kinds of albums esp in metal are victims of groupthink for sure

Let’s not forget that edgy kids just wanna fuck with the average and yeet a 1 or 5 on something real fast. And I believe that population has grown since when I joined this site.
The rating a reviewers puts on an album is way more important to me nowadays. Not gonna form my opinion by it. But it might add an extra layer to something.

guessing you werent here when there used to be 5/5 black veil brides reviews posted every other day?

I tend to stay away from anything BVB-related, but it doesn't sound low effort.
Annoying people who pop into a convo with a troll score is on the rise. Guess you could miss it.

what is a troll score

Album Rating: 4.0
It's when you rate a troll out of 5.
|

lol parks
first you claim to be an OG sputnikker and suddenly you don't know what a troll score is
|
| |
anyway there used to be more than a handful of people who'd routinely pop into threads just to comment something like "lol band is gay listen to electrocution posers"
