This may very well be my favorite country album of all time

I was going to scoff but then realised it’d make my top 10 - depending where you draw the line of what qualifies as country

I usually add a disclaimer stating that I didn't start listening to country music (outside of the mainstream radio garbage) until like...2019? So that might inform why Starmaker, Sailor's Guide, Elisabeth, et al would comprise my top 10. (edit: oh, and Isbell's Southeastern).

Hm, definitely not too 10 but probably top 30, depending on whether Americana counts as country or no, though I agree this is definitely on the edge of what I’d consider “true” country. This certainly draws on country songwriting and palettes but the overall “vibe” doesn’t really feel like country.

Yeah, if any of Lambchop, Wilco, Bill Callahan and Will Oldham count as country (which I’d argue they’re about as close to country as this) suddenly this album drops a little.
Tbh outright country albums I don’t usually rate 4.5-5 high - the John Prine debut is my only true country 5 I think
What’s the ultimate ‘proper country’ album Boney? Lucinda Williams?

I still need to get into John Prine. The extent of my knowledge is Ruston Kelly name dropping him in one of his songs lmao.

If you dig his humour and demeanour he’s perfect, nifty song writer too even if he generally keeps things very simple

Yeah Doof, Car Wheels on a Gravel Road is probably it. Southeastern too, though that one is so singer/songwriter-y it doesn't always feel like capital-C Country.

Lucinda is great, finally tried those Tom Petty covers she put out over the pandemic - that killer grizzled voice really does them justice
Sometimes she sings like she’s snarling - usually a good thing ;)

@Sowing, definitely check John Prine. His first stretch of albums is pure gold (although a lot of his later stuff is awesome).

going through this again and might have to bump this to a 5

Yeah revisited this recently and it’s lovely, scooped up the vinyl a while back. It falters a bit around the second half imo, but is such an impressive creative statement. Great stuff

Love this album but I keep my listens separated, if I listened to it too often I feel i'd quickly lose that magic

For some reason I haven't come back to this since it came out. May change that

Never heard this, but the idea of "cosmic country" sounds pretty enticing. I'll check it out over the weekend
