Rooms was recorded in a cabin and it sounds like it. It feels very intimate. The production has a warm and organic quality to it. It's consistent as hell but each song still completely has its own identity. As someone who is a sucker for strong atmosphere, that album fires on all cylinders for me. It's insane to me that someone can love this while hating Rooms when this works for the same reasons Rooms does. The lyrics are personal and poetic like stories, the instruments are interesting but rarely dominate what's happening, and most importantly there are DYNAMICS. The softer moments are important because they contrast so well when the sound explodes into something big and passionate. BOTH albums do this to the max.

Rooms is consistently boring agreed. m/

I doubt I can explain it in a way that makes sense. Wildlife's and Rooms' vocals and lyrics, to me, are just too strong on the storytelling side and don't come together to make a lot of good songs. Which I can see how that doesn't make sense if I love Somewhere..., Panorama, and I even enjoy the Here, Hears. Those two albums just never clicked with me, and I gave them a LOT of effort.
I've always said with those 2 albums that it was a logical progression for the band, and I still respected the hell out of them as artists, but they just lost me on those 2. They got me back.

I hate to admit this, but I was not at all impressed by their chicago show last night. vocals sounded exhausted in a bad way, venue was too large, musicians aside from vocals lacked energy in performance, music didn't sound nearly as colossal live as it does on record (especially with the new songs).
This was my third time seeing them, but first time seeing them headline and unfortunately, I would have taken their performance as openers wayyyy over what was on display last night.
The show was fine, but did not in anyway meet my admittedly high expectations.

Interesting. I guess I could see how it would be difficult to translate this album's atmosphere in a live setting.

when i saw them in NY i was blown away, especially with the new songs

I think a lot had to do with the venue they were at. It was a large venue typically more suited for music like Tallest Man on Earth and The Mountain Goats and Connor Oberst. I think the venue and band just didn't match up right.

i saw them in ny as well, and i thought they were amazing. i got into them after seeing them open for thursday(?) like four years ago, and it was one of my favorite live performances i've ever seen. i might be a bit biased because i was high, but i thought the ny show was fantastic. the new songs translated really well imo, and the additional members blended really well. really tight in general, and jordan killed it as always

Finally got around to listening to this. Really like it. A lot better than the last one.
But why the hell are the vocals so low in the mix at times?
