I love the vocals here, but I think the vocals on The Original Sin are much more palatable in comparison ... at least for people getting into COF.

Well, on The Original Sin I wouldn't say they were "softer" just more in line w/traditional black metal (though they definitely still have their own feel).
Later albums from these guys (really starting at Damnation and a Day) his voice gets a bit squawkier. I actually love the vocals from Nymphetamine and Thornography, but I seem to be an outlier in that regard.
On Darkly, Darkly... and Manticore his voice just sounds tired.
On the latest two, his voice sounds amazing again, though it's more in line with Nymphetamine than this, or Cruelty and the Beast.

Yeah, the screeching is extra screechy here so it can be a bit much for me too. But I think it's the best in terms of creating that strong, terrifying/seductive gothic atmosphere that they are going for.
