I mean, in the strictest sense yes they write pop songs but again pop is not their primary appeal. I've never seen gushing about the hooks on a National album before.

It's all personal preference though and I accept that; I just think you might benefit from approaching this from a different perspective than it seems you currently are.

I'm with Boney here. I think their fun side definitely exists and is maybe underappreciated, but it's hardly a main element of their sound. 90% of the time they sound sad, anxious, reflective/insightful, deep.

I like how Gyro has a 2016 list for worst albums of the year but no best of list lol

"TWFM has more of a sentimental relevance, but I know that this is their best."

“Am I the only one who finds the somewhat peppy horn-like sound in Guilty Party a tad annoying?”

Man Guilty Party is neck and neck with title track and I’ll Still Destroy You for best National song, which I guess is understandable as each seem to complete the whole.

Ill still destroy you and guilt party are amazingly unmemorable. Like, after 4 listens to the album i still couldn't tell you what either of those songs sounds like

Nothing here is a contender for best National song. Currently my favorites here might barely make the top 20 at best.

On that we can agree boney. Not a single track is eligible except maybe carin and gym

Empire line, guilt party, and I'll still destroy you must induce amnesia, because i can never remember a single second of them.

Guilty Party and Kid A’s Morning Bell sound very similar to me.

Empire Line is like a significantly worse version of Sorrow. I like the fluttering guitar on guilty party though, and destroy is very pretty in general.

EDIT: BrushedRed's comparison makes me want to throw something

Sorry Brushed but that comparison is wack, careful where you say that lest it turn into another "fuck it, it's a 5".

Slowdive is still relevant and still in my top 3. Didn’t expect this album or Science Fiction or it would be number 1. Still trying to decide to between this and Science Fiction. Slowdive is still a five
