I agree, considering it's length you actually don't say a lot other than "Mastodon are a respected metal band and this is their new album. They usually sound big, and this album also sounds big."

@budgie I guess you didn't dig this one that much, right? Not even the closer?

"Overly repetitive use of certain adjectives makes it feel like a 3 para review has been stretched to 6."

it's pretty much the same issue on most of his reviews

@dewinged i listen to the first couple tracks from the leak but wasnt really committed, but i did double check what track was on during precious stones because i really was digging it.

and then i checked out the Show Yourself music video and thought the track was fun. not bladecatcher fun but i liked it for its shameless happy-metal style like CKY or HIM (both of which i love)

but yeah ill get around to checking the album a-z. i mean i still need to check out arctic thunder and darkthrone is basically the only reason i dont hate being alive

There isn't a whole lot else to say about Mastodon in a review if they keep delivering they way they have, and in each paragraph I tried to focus on different things. It's not like they're that long, this is a pretty average length review. I also didn't repeat adjectives, I'm just explaining how it's a diverse album while also sounding mainstream.

it's very jarring to read all these hyperbolic words for things that imo don't deserve the praise (even you realize they aren't reinventing the wheel) and i guess that's what makes it seem quite repetitive to me

you have a lot of talent when it comes to vocabulary but i feel your writing formula is restricting you from using that talent in the best possible way

On your first point, if you're talking about having your personal feelings about the album having rated it a 2/5 while reading my positive review, then of course you won't agree or think the album deserves the praise.

Whether it's too hyperbolic, people can have that opinion because it might come across that way to some (especially if they totally disagree), but it's just meant to come across as praise for what I think, as a longtime fan, to be the band's best work in many years.

I couldn't think of many fresh things to say about such a popular and well covered band like Mastodon, so I just drove home my points on why I thought it was a surprisingly excellent album.

well of course, that was one thing i was trying to say there. it's just that you're not sounding very convincing when you're having the same formula and same kinda praise on most of your reviews. i guess what i'm trying to say is that i feel you're not challenging yourself enough

Maybe, though this was challenging to write in the sense that I had to find enough interesting and original things to say in a positive review of a Mastodon record in 2017. I just wanted to cover this album cause I'm a fan, but my next reviews are of much more abstract music than this. I just like to mix it up with what I cover, and do try to watch my hyperbole. It used to a bigger issue with my reviews than whatever it is now.

@AdolfChrist That's about how I feel, except I'd say it's a more refined version of omrts. It could grow to a 4, but I think it's probably gonna stay as is. This record really is fun. I've actually had the chorus of Show Yourself stuck in my head all day.
