For someone who really doesn't care what others think of your opinions, you sure keep going at Futures for not "rebutting".

Come on man. We don't need to keep dragging this petty drama on.

I've always thought of indie pop to be upbeat stuff like Los Campesinos or Walk the Moon or whatever. Like indie rock just poppier and possibly taking inspiration from synthpop/electropop or other subgenres.

Snide most of this thread all you're doing is extending an argument with Futures which should've ended a long time ago. Nobody really cares if you win it or not just let it go already

I think indie pop has a vibe that usually separates it from what is considered standard pop. Since the whole point of Pop music usually is to be upbeat. So Walk The Moon, Black Keys, or even Of Montreal could all easily fit in "indie".

It's like a new alternative or something.

Walk the moon is pretty electro/dance-pop imo, the indie does not show at all when you put it alongside most other mainstream hits these days

Black Keys and Montreal definitely, but all Walk The Moon has that separates it from most pop is the voice singing imo

sharkdude, this song is one of the most stereotypically indie pop songs in the entire universe:

shut up and dance is their first single that sounds very noticeably NOT indie. the rest certainly are.

I think their debut has more of an indie sound than their latest. But electro pop is a fine label for them.

Yeah that's true. But early stuff definitely has more of an indie sound.

okay I'll give you credit, there is definitely a 'vibe' that goes with most indie pop, but the genre is so stylistically diverse it's hard not to imagine it as just pop without the 'mainstream' part

also imo a couple low charting hits isn't really enough to disprove that notion imo (regarding The Smiths)

but the smiths had a #1 hit and few other top 10s, the rest are all fairly peripheral but still

"but the smiths had a #1 hit"

should've clarified, by 'charts' I meant pop-charts, not general album charts

the thing about indie pop is that indie pop is much more likely than normal pop to approach/obtain influence by many different other subgenres.

contemporary pop these days almost singularly reaches into electropop, synthpop, contemporary r&b, and some edm genres (almost purely house).

indie pop reaches into electropop, synthpop, chamber pop, dream pop, twee pop, indie rock, art pop, indietronic, indie folk, jangle pop, power pop, psych pop, neo-psych, and so forth.

"There are tons of Indie Pop artists that have reached the top ten though."

those artists usually didn't make those songs with the intent of charting tho, that's what I mean by "exist outside the charts"

If the definition of indie pop applies on the same context as indie rock I don't think charts or even labels really matter, just look at Franz Ferdinand. I do believe though that there's a distinctive sound on indie genres but I honestly can't tell the exact difference

that's kinda arbitrary. like janelle's first album didn't at all have the intent to chart. while her second did. both are pure pop af tho.
