They could call their album "It's a Shame We Have to Sing Like Dire Straits Now".

His vocals and lyrics are pretty much always bad but luckily the music and production make up for it most of the time.

I do think its a fantastic album, but Happy Returns i feel like is a bit unneeded, really, it kinda feels like Steven wanted to add a "happy" ending, just to have a "happy" ending

Happy Remains isn't a happy ending though

Granted, but i think the album would be fine if Ancestral was the closer

Happy Returns a happy ending? Blasphemy! We're talking about one of the saddest songs on the album, just read the lyrics. It's merely the dizzy output of a person losing faith both in communication and living creatively. The hand is no longer searching for sth to grab, it just stops writing. The letter is the ''what if'' of the story, what would happen if she had finished it, if she concacted her brother, if she had shown any signs of needing help. Emotional overdose right there and if you think of it as a happy ending you've never even heard of the song.

ah, thats my fault then, for some reason didnt think it was her talking at the end since she "goes" in Ancestral, makes sense now, oh yes the lyrics are great on the track im not dismissing that

It's even more chilling when you consider that the lyrics were based on the true setting Joyce was found. She had bought and wrapped presents. It's not sure where she intended to send them, though.

I thought this was a pretty good album a while ago, yet nothing is really making me want to return to it. I guess the prog tropes aren't so fresh. But some awesome songs for sure, like Routine.

"In Absentia has some solid moments but is far and away his most overrated album imo"

I'm sadly starting to agree with this

Routine and 3 Years Older are easily in my top 5 SW songs (including Porcupine Tree and all of his other projects)

I've only heard this, In Absentia and Deadwing so far. Arriving Somewhere and Routine are basically fighting it out for top spot, they're both so enchanting.
