i don't think it lacks heart in any way, shape or form. i just think it approaches the concept of sentimentality and emotion through electronic music in a much more abstract and mind-numbing way. that'd be like saying, for instance, that radiohead's the bends has more heart to it than kid a just because it sounds more human. i actually feel latter-phase autechre sounds pretty organic for how demonically abstract it is. i'd say their early-phase has a bigger emphasis on emotion indeed, but i wouldn't say their latter-phase lacks heart exactly, it just lacks the emphasis on emotion and strives to achieve balance between technicality/innovation and emotional forcefulness (and imho it mostly succeeds).
