They're way too melodic to be classified under any sort of technical tabel, in the same way that Dream Theater is.

what has melody to do with technicality, though? And besides, I wasn't suggesting a technical label, just that 'progressive metal' would do just fine.

I knew that's what I said too, I was just explaining myself. Plus, I think emphasis on melody usually belies technicality.

I understand that technicality has been widely associated with dissonance lately, because of tech death, but I don't think there's anything that rules out melody from technical efficiency.

I don't mean an emphasis on dissonance as much as rhythm. I find rhythmic metal falls under the banner of "tech" better. And I'm not denying Haken's technical ability by grouping them into the melodic category.

Falling Back To Earth is my favorite Haken track in their discog, represents everything I love about prog.

Every once in a while I feel the need to listen to this again so I'll maybe see the masterpiece other people see in this. Didn't happen so far. But I feel like the next try is coming soon.
I know a guy who says Falling Back To Earth was the best Prog Metal song of the last decade. Well, it's not evem the best Haken song of the last decade imo. Quite good though.

I'm kidding for the most part hahaha,
But tbh I always felt the similarities to Tool were quite strong there

Like, the riff, the drums, the oriental melodies, it got Tool in its genes

Always made me think of Dream Theater's more oriental songs more, Tool is way more hypnotic in a sense. I think Falling Back to Earth is a really good song here too

The thing with Haken for me is that they've always been good, but never blew me away like their peers did.

They never really feel original, but I think they are really good at collecting bits and pieces from all over prog metal and creating their own music with it

Yea, that's always been their strength it seems. They're still good songwriters

This album is moodier than I remember, eh a lot of it kind of comes and goes for me, but Pareidolia and Cockroach are good

I never liked Atlas Stone as much as others did. It's a perfect mirror of the album in general though imo. It has great parts and more boring ones

Haken really tried to experiment with their sound on Affinity, and people didn't take it quite well, haha. But I think Henshal's solo album Cocoon is more left-field prog than Haken, if someone desires to take a look.
