this is like the crowning achievement of the sub-genre as far i'm concerned. the only reason i don't hate that term is because these dudes have so readily embraced it. i think they might be the originators of the style. might have been lil b though.

i always thought it was clouddead, but their album sounds nothing like this so idk

clouddead doesn't really count i don't think, they're too removed from the actual rap scene. not that they didn't break the ground first aesthetically at least a little bit, but cloud rap always seemed to me like it was defined by street-raps over those "cloudy" beats.



guys like MAz and lil b had probably never heard of clouddead. both have mixtapes you can still find as old as early 2009 (and there are probably older) so we'll never really know who started it, but i know squadda used to produce beats for lil b so maybe they both have claims.
