I think I've come to realize that I prefer the idea of this album to the album itself

The tunes on Side A are all bizarre, energetic, infectious bangers (except for "Always Crashing" which is an excellent slow-burner) and Side B is easy to get lost in (in a good way)... but the dichotomy between the two halves creates an album that is uneven on the whole. I don't feel like I'm listening to a cohesive LP, I feel like I'm listening to two almost completely different EPs back-to-back (both quite strong, mind). The juxtaposition is a really neat concept, but the contrast is so stark that it damages the flow of the album.

It only really damages the flow if you're thinking of the album as a singular piece, which I don't think was the intention. Side A and Side B are supposed to be two contrasting statements, much like Dylan's Bringing It All Back Home. Incidentally, that's my favourite Dylan album, and this is my favourite Bowie.

I see where you're coming from Ocean

I guess I don't usually reach for ambient stuff like Side B whereas I could spin Side A over and over again before getting tired of it so maybe those preferences make the transition feel more disjointed to me?

jarring transition prob has more to do with kids these dayz and their computers which play all the tracks straight through whereas back in the day you'd have to get off yer arse and flip the record over etc

Yeah, exactly. You should really think of the record as though there's actual space between sides A and B.
