Does anyone know of any band remotely like these guys? Both their LPs were stellar work…

The band did a Digipack release for this album that I was unaware of until now, so I purchased it from a reseller on discogs.com.

I'm also seriously considering getting into vinyl. Lots of albums are mastered with higher dynamic range and will sound different in pure analog. Any recommendations for a cheap but good turntable?

Is it time to bump Unexpect again?

Yes, yes it is.

Such a shame this isn't on streaming.

There are some bands like Diablo Swing Orchestra that sometimes hit a similar vibe to Unexpect, but I don't think anyone has come close to doing the sound as much justice or as consistently

Nobody really before or since has matched them. One-of-a-kind, for better and for worse.

This *occasionally* threatens to be my favorite album of all time. It's at least been in my top 20 for forever, and it bounces up and down.

Yeah, it's wild that nobody comes close to even operating in the same space lol

I go back and forth on whether this or their first is better. Both are pretty much wall-to-wall bangers

Depends on what you're in the mood for. I find that this is the perfect encapsulation of their influences in the most cohesive way possible, whereas the debut is basically insanity hanging by a thread.

I tend to prefer this one, it still amazes me how airtight their songwriting was here.

I think I liked that insanity-feeling a little more.

The unhinged sections of something like Desert Urbania and Meet Me at the Carousel are just so bonkers and truly unique. Definitely agree that this album is more impressive the writing is

I definitely wish this was easier to stream. Thankfully I got a CD, I just rely on that when I feel the urge lol.

If anything, bands like Diablo don't get crazy enough, or the songwriting isn't quite there.

Yeah, any known reason why it's not up? Debut and the EP are...

Diablo is a good time and get zany in their own right, but they just don't have the chops to be as good. Still fun and worthwhile. Can't think of anyone else who is really in the space tho

No one. And probably no one ever will, it's far too niche to ever really be successful. Unexpect had a great cult following but I don't think they were going to get much further. I wish I was wrong.

Or maybe it's just too hard to execute this style in this way. I mean, nobody ever tried to out-Gospel Gospel except for Gospel themselves. Maybe you just can't out-Unexpect Unexpect.

I think it's probably a mix of both.

I'm very lucky to have seen Unexpect in 2006 or 2007. The fans were devoted, but there are only so many who wanna hear this type of project like you said lol I wish they stuck around as a passion project on the side while they support themselves through other means, but I get it. There was so much work and devotion that went into their music with that many people

Man I wish I could've seen them once. They look fantastic in the videos that I've been able to see.

In an ideal world, they stick around and maybe do another album, but if this is the end of the story, it's a hell of a parting gift.

they were incredibly live. It was amazing how much energy they were able to bring despite being cramped on the small stages they played lol

Oh that's true lol, they probably filled those spaces up. I remember when I saw The Callous Daoboys recently that they looked pretty snug on stage. All 7 of em lol

How was their bassist live? He was always one of my favorite players.

He was insane. One of the best metal bass players imo. He was doing all his crazy two-hand tapping while dancing like a goblin. Literally went goblin mode. It was really impressive

"Literally went goblin mode" sounds like the best thing to ever witness lol, I need this in my life.
