This is no bullshit avant-garde like Metal Machine Music of Lou Reed, this actually is complex, not random at all music. Beefheart knew what he wanted, he re-imagined rock music in a joyfull and genius way that very few artists did, I like how it's chaotic but controlled at the same time like Charles Mingus on The Black Saint album, unlike many people think the only improvisation here is the saxo parts, the rest is well thought craft. We have to thank Don because indeed he inspired so many musicians to experiment with new ways of playing instruments.
My fav: Veteran's Day Poppy. This track it's Beefheart at his best, such a freaking genius song, how the first part of the song and that riff magically transforms in a mindblowing complex riff, that guitar tone and the inventive drums do the rest.
