I'd say Floyd as well
There are other personal favorites which are less popular like Supertramp
And there are plenty of other that I wouldn't know if I'd pick, but I can certainly see why some people would like Genesis, Yes, Tull, Camel, Van der Graaf, Uriah Heep, Renaissance, etc, etc

thank you for not saying Rush

Pink Floyd are the least prog of all prog bands, they are more like art rock
King Crimson + Van der Graaf > other classic prog picks >> modern prog boomers that make music for prog archive boomers (Neal Morse etc) >>>> Marillion clones >>>> prog metal
|
| |
I'll have you know those Marillion clones you speak of prefer to be called neo-prog

"Pink Floyd are the least prog of all prog bands, they are more like art rock"
I think that depends on whether you use the strict definition for prog or the more wider term, with the stricter one applying "prog" to bands which use determined time signatures or song structures and the broader term being a least defined one with characteristics such as longer songs, some common lyrical themes, a big variety in instruments and sound in general and, of course, an innovative approach to playing rock music
|
| |
Animals is the only definite prog album imo. The rest I'm unsure of. I think a lot of bands are wrongly grouped with prog just for having concept albums or eclectic influences. *Cough*Prog Archives users
In hindsight, a lot of bands labelled as prog can be revised. Much like how some bands labelled as punk in the past are not considered punk now. (e.g Some bands were given a genre label in order to drive sales)

Yeah, it seems you are more keen to the more specific definition of prog. I lean more towards the other vision of it.
I think it's a matter of interpretation really

How is Wish You Were Here not Prog?
|
| |
Because it's art rock. The only prog moments are aspects of shine on you crazy diamond.
That album would probably be my second pick for most progressive Floyd.

While I don't personally think prog and art rock are the same, it has been said before that they can be used as synonyms.
I'll keep my posture on prog lacking an official definition

But when you say 'prog band' everyone knows it's some multi section noodle smorgasbord with a rock beat in the breakdown

I’ve been letting this marinate and have decided that Starless alone makes it 4-worthy. Beautiful track. Wonder where’s best to go next, only heard this & ‘In the Court...’
Any thoughts?
