"I haven't jammed anything newer than ToT (full albums, that is; I know various newer tracks), but I feel the instant dislike this band gets is a bit exaggerated."

Jam Systematic Chaos in full before saying that the dislike is exaggerated.

the only thing that can save them is Mike Portnoy.....2 hours and 10 minutes is just way too long for these guys especially following a few disappointing albums.....i love a nice ballad but this is just over the top.....some nice moments as well but i'll never remember where they are

Just checking their website for The Astonishing shows Dream Theater has really lost it at this point.

Haven't heard it yet, but judging from what Titan said sums up everything about their recent albums

Mangini is painfully bland

Portnoy truly was the one thing holding the band together all these years

I actually like the new album. The song arrangements are shorter and leaner, as well as more emotional and less wankish (albeit cheesy). Imo, despite the album being too long, I feel as though it's the best DT album since Six Degrees

The bands downfall started well before portnoy left.

i think they have some pretty good songs on each of their post 6 degrees albums.......however, perhaps portnoy was on point with the band needing a hiatus towards the end of his run.....i didn't find anything off the new album to be terrible, just very samey, and like brendan mentioned, there is very little wankery throughout which is a great thing

definitely worth checking out beefshoes

In general, yes. But Black Shadows was a great album.

I never really got into Dream Theater, but holy shit, that new album is so incredibly tepid and uninteresting. There's no way in hell I can finish that.

ToT is a solid album, just has 2 really cringe songs. Octavarium t/t, Root of All Evil and These Walls alone make Octavarium anything but a failure.

Systematic Chaos... well it has Ministry of Lost Souls.

Black Clouds is also solid.

In fact, I listened to octavarium t/t today and if what people say about the Astonishing and its ballad is true then it's a shame because the first 10 ballad-y minutes of the t/t is brilliant, lyrically and musically.
