Street Lights is such a banger

Oh don't get me wrong, Robocop is super catchy and I love the strings in the song, but yeah some of the choices especially on the lyrical side are baffling. I really despise how Kanye has to ruin the outro with the "haha that was a good one" part.

listened to this again today and I guess dated or unoriginal is the wrong way to put it, it just influenced a style that I have no interest in. I’ll die on the hill that this was Kanye’s attempt to make a mainstream pop album, that can’t be denied.

I reeeeally don’t see how Fantasy could be called mainstream pop, especially in comparison to this

"I’ll die on the hill that this was Kanye’s attempt to make a mainstream pop album, that can’t be denied."
I think it comes off like that in retrospect because of how it shaped contemporary music for the next decade+
but i agree with norma that mbdtf (and graduation) were far more of an attempt by Kanye to make a mainstream pop album that everyone would love than this album was... ye has even stated such in interviews

Calling mbdtf a crowd pleaser is fair, it was the album people wanted him to make (which apparently Kanye’s fragile ego now considers a bad thing?). But that’s because people had high expectations for Kanye as an artist and he exceeded them with flying colors. Fantasy isn’t some by-the-numbers lowest common denominator type pop album, it’s extravagant and unconventional. The songwriting is progressive, the orchestrations are lush and moody, and the tonal diversity each song brings to the table creates an experience that can hardly be classified under 10 genres, let alone simply “p0p”
Also I think some of you are confusing critical success with mainstream viability. Sure, Fantasy is widely considered Kanye’s strongest album within his own fanbase, but that doesn’t automatically mean it’s a staple at clubs or on pop radio. In fact, the singles from this, namely Heartless and Love Lockdown, fit much more snugly in those environments, while you only hear All of the Lights played by marching bands at football games these days. If nothing else, I hope you guys can see that 808s is first and foremost a pop album (mainstream argument aside), whereas fantasy brings a more diverse palate of genres to the mix.
and I stg if drifter responds to this with some snide and mildly insulting remark, I will look at my phone sternly

i've noticed that people who got into kanye like 2016 onwards think 808's is overrated/mid. the sounds are incredibly dated, sure, but it's still a really strong album.

this is the only thing he's made that I can revisit and not get irritated at, MBDTF is an absolute mess to me in retrospect.

donda > tlop > tcd > 808s > lr
that be the drifter top 5 i think. 808s and lr kinda interchangeable. depends on my mood cause sometimes lr reallly hits and sometimes its just kinda mild
