Well, it was pretty much a crash and burn allegorical attempt.

I like Green Day but I was really disappointed with this album. The only songs that I liked were Letterbomb, and Holiday.
Wake Me Up When September Ends and Boulevard of Broken Dreams have got to be worst songs I’ve heard by Green Day. What’s worse was the fact that those songs were everywhere you went.
I bought this album the first day it came out because I heard Holliday previously and I thought this album would be really decent. At first I didn’t really like the album but I thought maybe that this album would grow on me like some others but I was wrong. It just sounds so bland and boring just like the other carbon copy bands out there. I however will give them kudos for at least trying something different by creating a “rock opera”.
To be quite honest, the thing that infuriates me the most about American Idiot is the fan boys/girls who constantly blather on about how Green Day is the greatest band ever. I’ll bet you some of those same kids didn’t even listen to Green Day before American Idiot was released (well maybe except for Good Riddance.) Green Day is a pretty good band and I like to listen to them every once in a while but they are given way too much credit.
All in all, I’ve listened to worse albums but there was nothing really special about this album. I most of the resentment I feel towards this album stems from all the hype this album has received and all the fan boys/girls whom hold this album with such high regard. I haven’t listened to this album in about a year but maybe I’ll listen to it again sometime (well except for Wake Me Up When September Ends and Boulevard of Broken Dreams) now that I’m not being forced this album down my throat anymore.

Its weird, despite all the radioplay the song gets, I'm really starting to like "Wake Me Up When Setember Ends".
and tbh, I've NEVER heard anyone say in public that Green Day is the best band ever. It must be a high school thing.

i dont know why the hell or how the hell i got this album ive had it since it came out around but turned it on for a bit and shut it off, never even dared touching it again.

im going to clear a few things up
first off those people who think that this album is too political need to remember how most punk and rock bands started, they played music to be defiant and show whats wrong with the world and try and change it, now im not saying every rock song or punk rock song has political undertones but politics have been a part of music since the 70's
secondly i dont think that anyone on here thinks that american idiot is like the best album ever made or anything so i dont see why everyone hates people who like this cd even though it hasnt been happening as much
but i would have to say a 3.5-4 out of 5

I keep reading posts that say "Dookie is better" or "American Idiot sucks, their old stuff is better" and I've come to the realization that to these people nothing will live up to their expectations. Dont you people realize that you'll be saying the same thing album after album, because in you're mind nothing will ever be better than Dookie. I really don't see how if you are or were a Green Day fan how you could hate this album so much because musically and lyrically it much more diverse than any of their earlier recordings. I think most of the bias comes from the bands change in sound from punk to being a bit more poppy. But if you could open your minds a little, you would see that isn't such a bad thing, a little diversity in your music isn't gonna kill you. Now, if you really hate the band I can't change your mind, but to the real fans just open your minds a little.

or slappy maybe we just like their old stuff better because it is better. Pop punk from what ive heard is about a lot of simplicity so the fact that its diverse or whatever doesnt mean shit.

the fact is i dont care if an album is diverse. i just care if i like it.

Doesn't mean everyone else overlooks diversity. No one wants to hear the same thing over and over, which is a big weak point of pop-punk. Lots of repitition; the more diverse and interesting you can make your songs, the more credibility you'll get in the public eye.

^Thank you Serpento
Green Day wanted to do something different, and frankly I'm glad they didn't make another Dookie. It would be cool though if for their next album they go back to their roots, but I don't see that happening.

Neither do I. I predict their next album to be another lame stab at maturity, rather than a fun loving album about masturbation and such. I miss that.

Other than NoFX, I really, really do not want to hear a bunch of late 30-something dudes singing about masturbation and sniffing glue. This album, was a fairly natural move, albeit being so grandiose.
I think a humbler record like Warning would be apt for their next album.
