@Diceman, I will definitely clarify, because you asked nicely and didnt automatically discredit me because I'm "Progmaster". When I say 'bareness', I mean not dolling up the simple, heartfelt folk songs with baroque-esque arrangements. Now, I am a sucker for well orchestrated symphonic arrangements in indie and folk music (The National, Andrew Bird, Sufjan Stevens), but I also like folk at it's barest, IF the lyrics and melodies themselves REALLY stand out, which for me, they don't. Iver's melodies annoy me, his falsetto is dreamy (He IS a fantastic singer no doubt, but I don't like how he uses his voice on here) but the fact that it's usually following some sort of obnoxious melody is something that I can't stand. Iver was sad, wrote this alone in a cabin, and that story itself is another reason why people overrated this. It's not memorable, I can't stand the melodies, and even his decent lyrical content cannot save this album from being an emotional failure, to me at least.
I hope that clears it up, Im typing this quickly so tell me if there's anything here that really couldn't be considered valid for an argument. If you'd like to argue more, just ask, no problem.

Robertsona, you idiot, its a 5 FOR HIM because he connected with it personally. That is a good justification for 99% of 5s.

not trying to start an argument or anything this is the album that got me into like 90% of the music i listen to now. like before i heard this i was like "oh my god he's playing music on an acoustic guitar!! what is indie??" so this is seriously the most important album in my musical progression.
also i'd give it a 4.5 straight up probably so that helps too

maybe I've dissected this album to much, and maybe I'm being too harsh, but I really do think this thing is overrated, and I definitely think it can be laughably annoying at times.

@Rom, if it's a perfect 5 for you, and it's something that got you into music, then by all means 5 it. Music is subjective. Just because I think this thing is overrated because of the story behind it and its total blandness doesn't mean you shouldnt find it emotionally spine tingling.
Its all about personal preference

oh, haha ok good. I would write a review for this, but the fact that I'm Progmaster writing a negative review for an album with no technicality would get me instant negs and even more hatred. Btw, even with my feelings on this album, I still love the folk genre unconditionally.
