always suspected that it literally melted brains on release
risingson is awesome and sets a mean standard, but any curated mezzlist that doesn't include any of black milk/group four/the title track is honking on the wrong boof

Unfinished Sympathy melted brains.
Teardrop video melted brains
As amazing as Mezzanine is and was on release it was a a bit too dark at the time although the trend was definitely to bring things down a level (OKC, This is Hardcore were massive downers),
The album was a touch too mopey and a change in direction for the group for minds to be melted but it was hugely popular and appreciated.

I maintain, this had gang energy, Mezzanine seemed like the work of a bunch of people fed up with each other - although considering the tone that worked

They did have the hump with one another around the time it was being made and upon its release from what I recall.
I’ve just watched the Teardrop video again for the first time in years.
Fuck me.

I think I comitted a terrible mistake starting my trip hop voyage with this band a few months back. I've heard some other good albums but nothing compares to this or Mezzanine honestly. Nothing is even close. I've heard some albums that are pretty neat like Lamb or Maxinquaye but I think nothing is surpassing those two goats

Genres evolve because of events
Trip-Hop was a ‘genre’ of literally less than 10 bands.
Massive Attack are best of the best.

I had a soft spot for The Aloof
I think with trip hop it was more an influence that popped up on albums by already popular bands a lot of the time - there’d be the token trip hop tune/production

Sinister, dark, soulful, menacing, powerful and empowering, thuggish, raw, artistic, thought provoking and mind expanding.
