I wish Deftones would learn how to master their albums [2]

I like the variation. Gore and Saturday night wrist I understand as well as Diamond Eyes if people don’t like the production on those

Nothing against the production jobs as they often have killer sounding ones for my tastes, but it doesn't change how their music would sound quite literally twice as good without the compression ruining those jobs.

There's a full dynamic range digital edition of KNY on sites like HDTracks (I swear it's the last time I mention it in Deftones threads), I really suggest looking into it if you have €20 to spare or, uh, other workarounds to test before buying

Yeah, I don't know why they didn't just release the CD with the same mastering as the HDTracks version. I'm not going to pay $20 for some files, but I'd love to buy a properly mastered CD. It blows me away that most people here can't hear how compressed and fatiguing the regular releases of these albums are.

And as for the "maybe get a better sound system" comment poor mastering only becomes more apparent if anything on good speakers.

I'm not one for these sort of combo comps but I think this really is (sort of) like a combo of self-titled and Koi No Yokan. Shares the textural, ethereal vibes of the latter while having some of the airy, brutal, shoegaze approach of the former. Two of my favorite Deftones albums combining in sound (amongst others) to make another one of my favorite Deftones albums.

Nah, the albums available on streaming platforms (spotify, itunes, google music, etc) are the 2016 remasters and not the cd versions. I have SNW, White Pony, self titled, Diamond Eyes and ATF on cd and also I downloaded the whole discography on itunes before they updated to the garbage remasters. White Pony and Diamond Eyes, in particular, are pretty much unlistenable on those versions.

I never payed much attention to the mastering/production. Their 'sound' isn't the most articulate, detailed thing to begin with. It's always felt very hazy and distorted. I'm not listening to Steven Wilson here.

Yeah it sucks!!! They increased the treble and brickwalled the whole thing to death there. I noticed something was totally off when I heard Risk and compared it to the cd version. The dynamic range disappears entirely.

Storm - I've always loved Diamond Eyes but found people's obsession with it to be puzzling. It's such a solid record but never for a minute was my favorite, but come on, the production of the remasters is messing with you that bad?
