1 interlude is fine. albums full of them can stall the flow a bit. love a good intro though

Had to check what album you're talking about, I never gave Mudvayne a listen. Since the album is approx 70 minutes, do not the interludes help the album breathe to some degree? Sometimes I got problems focusing when all I get from an album is 70 minutes of pounding.

but if they got rid of one interlude and a couple of the filler songs that album would be one of the best metal albums of the 00s easily

Exactly. It depends, DJ Krush used them to tell a story with the collab artists featured on MiLight, which worked really well.

Aenima (Tool duh) contains way too many.

Cradle of Filth usually incorporate many too (including intros and outros) and they work reasonably well as palette cleansers or to set the mood.

'Since we still have 99 pages to go, d'you guys prefer albums with interludes, or albums with intros & outros that are in a different style from the album (recent example in mind, TWDALWBI by Rolo) ?'

Intro/outro is my preference, because I think there are more examples I enjoy than with mid-album interludes. One expertly placed interlude can actually improve the experience though, especially as a 'palette cleanser' - Majesty & Decay or Colored Sands are good examples. Multiple interludes are rarely optimal mind. So yeah, every album experience is individual and since I'm not a Sith, I will refrain from dealing in absolutes.

Edit: bugger, did Trif really just snipe me to the term 'palette cleanser' lol.

Basically agreed Demon. I just relistened to TWDALWBI and it struck me how the intro/outro are so well done and set/conclude the mood perfectly.

I also just went through my 5s to check if I can find a pattern in intro/outro vs. interludes. Spoiler: nope, I love every album I love for different reasons, some with interludes (Endtroducing, The Shape of Punk), others with intros/outros (The Mantle, Animals).
