Yeah feel the same way Talons, the softer or quieter moments are where they shine most strongly on their recent studio output.

Bar Damnation, heavy Opeth is best Opeth imo. These guys have one quiet mode that I *really* enjoy and they pretty much perfected it on Damnation. And maybe Coil, that's such a neat little folk tune.

Oh yeah Coil is fantastic. Such a lovely track.

I liked Damnation when I just got into the band but nowadays I don't enjoy it that much anymore. Can't really stand the mellotron and SW's voice.

So, digested the album now. For pros, some tracks have really fun progression going on. Favourites of the album are probably The Devil's Orchard, Haxprocess, Folklore. Some songs do fall flat though; take Famine for example. It starts really interesting slowly building up but then it changes mood 180. If that was Ayreon I wouldn't mind but in this case that chorus feels out of place. Marrow of the Earth could easily be less than half the length it has. Pyre sounds like at the time they obsessed over Jesus Christ Superstar.

Then we get to Face in a snow which, while a good closer doesn't present anything special.

That being said, it's obvious second half of the album falls short compared to first. But the melancholy of I Feel the Dark, positive kick from Slither or mastery of mentioned earlier The Devil's Orchard, Haxprocess, Folklore are enough to carry this album.

God, I can't write anything structural after I drink too much Yerba. If it read as chaotic, just take my tl;dr: good album where first half outshines 2nd and a little too much emphasis was put on sounding "classic". GOD IS DEEEEAAAAAAAD!

Moving to PC tonight.

Keep in mind, Pyre and Face in the Snow are bonus tracks. Marrow of the Earth is the actual closer.

Overall, love the natural, organic vibe on this < 3

Yeah that changes things a little, in this case Marrow of the Earth would not be too long and would work nicely

This times a hundred thousand.

Nice rating Fowo! And yeah, those last two were bonus tracks, and Marrow is a nice closer agreed.

If only I was a native english speaker (and didn't drink too much yerba) I'd love to write a full detailed review of this album. Heh, maybe in future

@Fowo Yeah, dude, keep up the spirit and have someone proof-read it for you. It's the opinion that matters, not the vocabulary skillz

And Axe's drumming. His drumming on Nepenthe seriously amazes me. The insane nuances and subtleties are a testament to his control and finesse

Yes yes yes Axe's drumming especially on Nepenthe omg Omair are we the same person?!

I'm still so sad that Axe didn't explore that style of drumming further on subsequent albums. It would have lifted them to higher levels immediately. Why didn't they opt for that?

Eternal Rains has that kind of drumming though, doesn't it? And many times on ICV I was awed by Axenrot for adding swifty, jazzy details

I have a handful of musical friends who think 'jazzy' is a positive adjective. I never got that. It's not like they actually listen to jazz.

For sure Mythodea, Eternal Rains is up there among the Opeth greats for me even. Was so stoked for Pale Communion when that one was released as a single.

It is very positive adjective in my book too Egarran. Jazz is delicious.
