As soon this the beauty of this clicked for me, Pale Communion seemed so watered down in comparison. It's still great, but the loose form flow and atmosphere that made this so unique got traded in for a more standard, but very well done, prog-rock style.

PC is great in its own right, Sorceress is their only soulless album for me.

Like it feels so rushed and the production is pretty horrible.

I think I could be more forgiving towards Sorceress when I eventually go back to it because ICV was an astonishingly good comeback. It's just a minor blip rather than something that changed their direction for the worst.

Venenum is really good yeah.

Mikael sounds especially inspired on that one, his clean vocals have reached another level.

I noticed literally no difference from the newest to any of the heritage and onwards shit

Better songwriting, melodies, vocals etc.

I get not being a huge fan of post-Heritage stuff and how it can all blend into one, though.

"loose form flow and atmosphere"

Yeah idk, this style worked better when the dm influence was there to add contrast. There are loads of musical sections I really enjoy on this but they don't really come together that well on most of the songs.

I feel like they adjusted for this on PC and then on Sorceress they bought back some of the heavy so I appreciated that. Agree the production is kinda shit on Sorceress tho

All that said, I am enjoying this more now than I did when it came out, might bump up rating soon if it grows on me more

PC has some of my favourite ''prog era'' songs from them (Eternal Rains... and Faith in Others), but it doesn't hold a candle to Heritage. Then, Sorceress may not have the highs of PC, but it's definitely more unified and cohesive. ICV is brilliant as well, second after Heritage.

Mythodea that is almost exactly how I feel about them.

Heritage best, a top tier Opeth record, ICV comes in second for their prog-phase; Eternal Rains is one of my fave Opeth tracks maybe even.

ICV is fanrastic! Much better than Sorceress.

Heritage is still my fav of their "prog rock" albums.

I think I'll settle on either 3.5 or 4; I like the idea of 'old' production but not exactly my cup of tea fully. I'll listen more to it today and then move to PC.

I prefer Strange Brew, Chrysalis and Sorceress Pt.II tbh, but yeah, the E on the T/T is godly simple and godly. Period.

Their heavy songs from this past decade, especially the Sorceress t/t, are better live imo. Check out their Garden of the Titans live album.

I have, but still the writing is not as good as on the songs I mentioned (to me).

Chrysalis is one of their heaviest songs. Agreed that Sorceress Part II is the best on that album.
