I can only get over a vocalists voice I don't like if the background instrumentation has many layers but from what I can remember this album's rather dry.

Most of the songs are pretty stripped down. I wouldnt even call the busiest one (Holland 1945) extremely layered. Its a standard four piece except for the horns.

The vinyl really makes songs like Holland, 1945 sound even less layered and busy than they actually are. It's both a positive and a negative really depending on your mood

Are those really contradictory terms, though? The production is pretty dry, but it does have a very full sound nevertheless.

"wait how do you not let vocals that you dislike affect your rates" Because its such a small percentage of the content. For me, unless its an artist with great emphasis on the vocals ( e.g Diamanda Galas) Then its unlikely to radically change my rating.

yea idk i guess i put more emphasis on vocals than you all do. they might allocate a minor portion of the music on paper, but they certainly feel like a pretty integral element to me. and tbh i am the kind of person that tends to fixate on aspects of music or film or whatever that annoy me.

Vocals can kill things that you would otherwise enjoy. Black metal is a prime example of a genre that has many elements I'd usually like but generally can't stomach in combination with what I consider shit-tier vocals. Or ya know, something like Danny Brown.
