I do wonder if all the Brand New fanboys who preach about 'separating the art from the artist' would react in the same way if Ronnie Radke did what Jesse Lacey did...

"We both know that logic is bull"

lol no it's not. who is to decide if music is good or well written? a chihuahua? a computer? people collectively make that decision. there is no other authority. so when most of a band's discography scores around a 4/5 or higher, from thousands of votes, it's fair to say that most people believe it to be good music. Three or four of their albums have received near unanimous critical acclaim as well, which only backs up the user ratings.

Who is to decide that it's sput averages that are more correct than, say, Rateyourmusic, which, by the way, has a larger userbase then?

I mean, in that case, this would be outside the top 4,500 albums of all time on that website. And devil and god is sitting at 3.79, getting obliterated by Modest Mouse

If they genuinely liked Ronnies music then yeah but almost everyone who I know thats a fan of Brand New also hates Falling In Reverse abd Escape the Fate.

i would argue that RYM averages are more representative as a subset of "everyone" given that [1] they have significantly more users, and [2] sput tends to be very metal-biased (which may not directly affect e.g. Brand New's ratings, but the point is that the Sput userbase has more uniformity on top of being smaller, meaning less variation and thus less representation of the true "whole").

Arguing that an album is good because it has a high average somewhere is pretty silly, come on now. If you love the album, fair enough.

Also, need I remind you that Slipknot was sitting at 100 on metacritic for two weeks?

Exactly, tectactoe. There's a thing such as selection bias for a reason. Sput is specific in its taste, and that's fine. But you can't use that as an argument in favour of an album being good or not.

Anyone who genuinely thinks that higher ratings = automatically good isnt something worth wasting time with.

I see no problem here lol

regardless of which website you use, the point is that you'd be hard-pressed to find a serious professional music critic who would honestly argue that Brand New is "bad" or that they are poor songwriters. You have to accept that your opinion is a major outlier.

critics are mostly just glorified users.

That's exactly my point; people seem to think they can pick and choose which bands they 'cancel' and which band's don't. If (god forbid) it came out that Jeremy Bolm or Geoff Rickly did something similar to Lacey, I'd have no issues dropping Touche Amore or Thursday even though they are two of my favourite bands of all time.

to each his own. I don't really "cancel" any band or tv show based on one person's actions. Acting like Brand New is the devil when one of the four members was a piece of shit...what 12 years ago? 14 years ago? is just dramatic. Ronnie Radke is currently a piece of shit but more importantly his music is shit. I don't like what Kevin Spacey did but I'm not gonna boycott House of Cards over it

The problem is that so many artists do this kind of thing (e.g. Lostprophets, Moose Blood, Tiny Moving Parts, Neck Deep, Drake, Capsize etc), and there's way too many people at shows that feel it's okay to touch women without their consent. Allowing bands to continue to have a platform sends out the message that this behaviour is acceptable, therefore leading to more bands feeling they can get away with this behaviour.

I see what you're saying, but each case is different imo. BN literally quit when everything happened, so that was that. Lostprophet dude raped baby, whereas Tiny Moving Parts dude got caught up in mere miscommunication which was made public for some god forsaken reason. Often times, bands will kick out the offender and carry on. See: Brockhampton. I think that's the correct way to go

That is not what happened with TMP at all. As someone who has spoken to the person who came forward about them (not sharing the details out of respect for her and because I don't know what happened), but the version of events that Dylan shared on Facebook is not how she would describe what happened. There's also Front Porch Step, who did the same thing as Lacey but unlike Brand New, rightfully got condemned for it.

They sometimes do, but sometimes when it's multiple members, one member gets made the scapegoat while the rest of the allegations don't get addressed (i.e. Moose Blood and Neck Deep).
