Yeah the new album just doesnt have much in the way of diversity. Like every song other than 7empest and the instrumental follow almost the same structure. Theres no heavy tracks like Ticks and Leeches, no radio friendly bangers like Stinkfist or Parabola, no humorous tracks like Rosetta Stoned, just the same overly long prog song over and over

I hope it grows on me but it just isnt doing anything for me now.

Took a few listens to really sink in for me. I've been loving Invincible and Descending ever since the live rips dropped, and enjoy the t/t more now in the context of the full album (even though it's the weakest track imo). 7empest, Invincible and Descending are career standouts.

I honestly think that lack of "radio-friendly bangers" is my biggest issue with FI, I need to give it another listen or two to solidify my opinion but my initial impression was that they just left out anything catchy or fun, which are two adjectives not often used to describe Tool but I think their absence is really felt on FI

Valid criticisms but album still slays. What it lacks in variety it makes up for in meticulousness.

the more i come back to it the more i think “am i listening to this because it’s THAT good or because i still can’t believe there is a new tool album available to listen to”

I'm moving into the 'that good' camp no doubt.

I think the album is fantastic, honestly. I can't wait to hear it with the missing segues. I think it will really bring everything together.

Invincible might be the tooliest that Tool has ever Tooled tbh. This is so good I have a feeling it's going to fuck with my life for the near future lol. I'm already considering taking the day off to jam this all day.

> it's going to fuck with my life
I realize I've missed that in music.

It’s a great album. Doesn’t break a whole lotta new ground tho. Less conceptual and more jammy, which is cool in its own right.

I always liked their longer tracks anyway.

I don't know how exactly to phrase this question - hope y'all click with what I'm getting at - is FI pretty consistently "serious" like Lateralus or does it also have its share of fun/goofiness like 10k Days?
Holding out till Friday.

It's almost entirely humourless which I guess is kind of a shame, but there's a couple of colourful lines in there for sure. Plus CCT... just... yeah...

^True. And we have have yet to hear the interludes. I read somewhere one was about an alien invasion or something. Pretty sure the album will feel more "full" with those segues.

uhh I haven't met one tool fan in the past ~2 decades who honestly cared for the interludes. 3 1-2 minute interludes to make an hour long record more full? no thanks.

lol I'm spoiled by Tool so I need the interludes. That's how the album was originally intended but didn't fit a CD, so I guess it's cool to have both options.

i love how this is still an issue

yeah it's pretty hilarious. the 80 min maximum has been the unbreakable standard for music, which is why some go out their way to make double albums.
