Lol, it's always jarring to see Zak's inexplicable love for this album. What random mediocre album will he fall in love with next?

Ha. Good lad.
Iโm sorry but this album is an absolute beauty. Iโm obsessed with it.

Album would be better if the band switched to the bridge pickup on guitar before hitting the record button

I wouldnโt have a clue to be honest mate but what I do know is the lute or whatever it is on here melts face.

Afraid I'm not getting this album. Damnation felt perfect to me but Heritage just doesn't sound Opeth to me at all. I like some of the early tracks but halfway through my interest just turns itself off. Too much random noodling for my tastes.
Also why didn't they put Face In The Snow as one of the main tracks? That song was better than about everything on there.

As long as it depends on personal taste, yeah, I can understand the 5s. But there was some "you just don't get it, you aren't into 70s prog stuff to fully appreciate it" back in the days like we had to do with a 460 min Terence Malick movie.

Yeah I could see how thatโd grate to be fair. Prog and 70s stuff be damned I just love how rich sounding and involving a record this is.

Yeah production-wise you can't get a lot better than this. Sounds amazing.
On songwriting our opinions differ.
|

The songwriting on this is generally strong with a few indulgent moments tbh. A lot it is much more structurally grounded than old school Opeth

definitely more coherent than the first two yeah

The first two and this prove that coherence isn't always needed, that it can even work incredibly well to fully embrace organically flowing pieces with twists and turns left right and centre. Magical records.

Bees knees

Iโll take the first two and this over any of their mid-2000s stuff tbh

Iโd take the first 3 and this over 80-85% of my entire music collection tbh
|
| |
"lol that's a piano on the first track"
What I mean is that all the guitar tracks were recorded in the neck pickup for this album or so I read in an old interview

First three, this and GR. Music at its finest.
