after the burials 'rareform' shifting into 'in dreams,' like i saw those guys months before they were considered a djent band. but seriously as a maryland/dc kid: it started with misha joking that his guitars make a 'djent' noise and myspace kids just kinda stuck with it, misha became super linked to sumerian and did the programming on the first animals as leaders album[tosin was in a band with the sumerian owner prior], thaaan you start having animals as leaders/periphery/ATB/born of orsiris/veil of maya/structures/fellsilent[proto tesserac]/probably a couple i'm forgetting all coming out with djenty albums around 2010 all on the same label, all playing shows with each other. there's tons of style crossover with noisecore/mathcore a la ion dissonance['cursed' is pretty much a djent album afiac it rules though]/danza/carbomb aaaaand the djent 'AxeFx' guitar amp-simulated tone permeates into like all modern deathcore/metal currently. but yeah periphery and it's circle of sumerian friends is what i'd classify as djent

just seems really contrived at this point in time and I agree with Christbait's sentiment of "Then it metastasized and is now the defacto word used to describe any metal a person doesn't have a personal taste for" and calling someone out for liking anything "djent" is the new "gay" and just seems lazy. I showed someone on this site (who will not be named) the last Darko US single Time Crisis and they called it "djenty deathcore" just because there's chugs over blast beats and I was dumbfounded at how disappointing their analysis was because they typically have a pretty good ear for tasteful music

“Djent" is thrown around here like a euphemism for bad metal.”

Oh totally agree there it’s the 2020s replacement for metalcore lol. People used to use it as a “this band sucks” moniker especially when there were breakdowns. God forbid there be a breakdown 😆

Completely agree with BAT those are the bands I think of when I think of djent.

i definitely don't think that's entirely fair nude. the ultra cleanly processed djent pseudo prog with clean choruses like northlane, erra, invent animate, currents, tesseract etc is a distinct genre/subgenre.

sure it can be overused and feel like a pejoritive but their are clear elements each of those bands possess. is djent the right word for it? probably not but it's too far gone to argue with that at this point.

and yeah people having an aversion to that sound is perfectly understandable as well. it has taken over a lot of metalcore and essentially replaced that mid 00's to mid 10's brand of core.

Well we went from gay as pejorative to calling something djent so I’d say that’s an improvement To be honest. But yes some people choose to use it as a negative connotation because they think that mostly that smattering of bands listed suck and all sound the same, over produced, etc. the same tired critiques that have been used for decades.

In most cases though, when someone gets called out for liking djent, it’s actually because they’re criticizing something for having djent characteristics when they actually like djent. So for example you got called out for complaining about this album sounding sterile when you in fact seem to like many bands that sound sterile. That’s what is being pointed out. Same thing always happens to Tundra lol

nash you're not dumb, you know damn well I know what djent is, I just refuse to even acknowledge the word because it's not 2010 anymore and the style of modern metalcore may have changed since then but djent ultimately is dead and has been dead for a long time now. in a perfect world that word shouldn't leave anyone's lips or fingertips in this year of 2026.

Elitists use "chugs" as a negative stigma completely ignorant to what a palm mute sounds like, "words"

In the reverse, I actually need my heavier stuff to have bite and hit like a truck. If it doesn’t it falls flat. The heavily produced doesn’t bother me typically. Like I’ve never loved FPU by ETID as much as many because the production choices they made make it seem raw but doesn’t hit as hard for me. The songs themselves rule. But I mean we all like what we like nothing wrong with enjoying heavily produced music

"djent ultimately is dead and has been dead for a long time now."

really? so it's all just metalcore to you? how can you compare something like august burns red or haste the day to erra or invent animate? it's understandable to not want to group those together because they share very little in common at this point. it's a distinct sound that elicits reactions, good or bad. like i said is djent the best descriptor for a genre? no but we are far beyond it at this point, it's a recognized genre by basically everyone.

like I honestly hate that word is an actual recognized genre on this website because god the amount of djent bands compared to other subgenres has to be laughably tiny, like the ole' baby maker

it's not just this website. it's any music website. wikipedia recognizes it as a genre as well. this has been established for close to a decade lol.

Yeah to me it’s actually a helpful delineator between sub groups of metalcore. If someone calls something djent I know exactly what to expect. And it’s not ABR. Agree with Futures totally.

Also I actually don’t think it’s so small anymore because lots of people started aping those bands too. Especially periphery cause of their following

i mean in the late 00s/early 10s you prob had a point but there’s a fuckton of djent bands and the style is so distinct from traditional metalcore and prog metal that i think it’s deserving of being called a genre. that said calling bands you don’t like djent when they are not djent is very dumb

we're commenting over each other now but Futures why even bring up djent in my dumb little stupid piechart, because I don't like how this album sounds or tech death in general? I gave it a shot and found it subpar at best, that's just my opinion, and because I liked a couple Veil and Periphery albums makes my opinion bad? I'll admit my takes aren't always Anthony Bourdain levels of nuance and grace but even I cringe at the d-word. at least I don't just say "shitty band" every single page and continue to do so for years

yeah nash that's all it is to me. just a further subcategory of bands that don't share a lot in common with traditional metalcore bands. it's not meant to be a slur even if some may use it that way lol. i like plenty of djent, mostly when the genre was in it's infancy.

that's why i loved periphery from when they dropped their first album. it was something so wild and different at the time. just completely fresh to my ears. they were actually innovators, misha especially ofc. the turn it's taken in the past like 5 years has become something so dull, sterile and predictable. the opposite as what it started as. at least that's my take!

[2] trilo bro

And also I mean realistically don’t all subgenres start small at first? And then if it’s popular it takes off and grows. This seems normal to me lol I don’t think we should toss subgenres just cause the population is small or the name is cheesy

Gimme more Nintendocore

i didn't know you were so offended. it wasn't because you didn't like this album, that's irrelevant to me. you called this ultra processed and sterile and pointed out the disconnect with the djent bands you enjoy like erra and spiritbox. just wanted to understand really, wasn't meant to denigrate you at all.

i love veil of maya and periphery btw! i am way way far off from being an elitist lol. i think anyone on this site can attest to that.

Futures is a djentleman I don’t know why Nude is in a tissy about his sterile pie. He’s usually pretty easygoing but we all are human I guess 🤖

they do nash, and we go through the same rigamarole any time a new style starts catching on. djent, downtempo dxc, dissodeath, progcore, and if more bands start aping vildhjarta we're gonna have the same discussion about thall (if we're not already!). i think djent being an onomatopoeia started things on the wrong foot for the people and if the name was less silly it might not get so much pushback but honestly if you don't think it's a genre at this point ur wrong go back to 2011 with that stale argument
