Album Rating: 4.0
It works surprisingly well as uber pleasant background music, yet loses all the weight of the narrative. Still easily one of the most interesting things I heard in 2021. Always wonderful to see a band come up with an absurdly ambitious idea and mostly nail it.

my listen today was something else. i haven't listened to the overture in forever and fuck after the motifs becoming part of my everyday life that hits hard. also Secretus is phenomenal, didn't think that til tonight. In The Space Between Pages is far better than I gave it credit for too.
5/5 album, this really is just in another class

yeah i see all these comments about filler and i'm like....but everything here is so good

It's not filler, so much as the band will implement a cool idea or a neat sound and then play it with limited variation for a minute or two longer than was probably justified. Not a problem if it was a one off, but they do it over and over again imho throughout the album, which adds up over a 90 minute LP. That being said, if you absolutely adore everything here I can see why that wouldn't bother you.
I feel like I'm appearing overly negative - I love the album, hence my rating, but God if they shortened some of the lengthier moments to get this at around 70mins of music it'd be so much better for it, I think.

the only thing i would cut is maps if anything. other than that this length is 100% justified, you just have to make the time for it. the moments they bask in and the time it takes for them to get there are worth it.

I agree, if I had to cut one track it'd be Maps because it's essentially a lesser version of At a Dance Where the Stars Cross (but I still like it a good bit). Lake Adeyoha is probably my least favorite in a vacuum, but it's very different from the rest of the list and sets up Eve nicely.

At a dance was the only song that really stuck out to me

Lake Adeyoha is probably my least favorite in a vacuum [2]
I've not cracked how it fits in with the narrative yet, so am reluctant to write it off, but it was the biggest snoozer imo from my humble 2 listens of this.

Lake Adeyoha has my favorite softer moments on the album and the percussion in the middle section???? fuck me, it's the coolest thing.

So two of my biggest issues at this point are:
1) The stretch from Secretus Liber to Lake Adehoya doesn't interest me as much musically, but has some of my favorite parts of the story. The lyrics and storytelling are beautiful and I still feel like the music works well as party of the story in tandem with the lyircs, but the slower parts aren't as engaging and these tracks are full of slower parts (outside of The Farmland and the Forest's Edge, which is just kind of basic musically). There are still strong highlights musically though (the percussion in Lake Adehoya like GreyShadow mentioned)
2) I really enjoy sitting and listening to this with the lyrics guide up, but dang it's a commitment to do so. It's worth it and I think the album justifies it's length, but I'll rarely be able to sit with no other priorities for 97 minutes to read through a pretentious yet lovely story with music. I'll maybe watch a movie or a stage play a couple of times, but with albums I love I want to return to them. Just the scope and structure of this things makes that so difficult
Also "…Before I can’t/Spin me" in the closing track is such a perfectly devastating lyric

Ok I'm wrong because for some reason on my current listen Secretus Liber is like the most beautiful thing I've ever heard
Edit: Ok well shoot in the Space Between Pages got me just as good this time around too. Is this a 5? Let's see how The Farmland and the Forest's Edge and Lake Adehoya do for me this time

literally me the other night with Secretus and Space Between Pages!!!
i like Farmland a lot tbh, it's a nice pace change at that point and idk, i can see how it would get written off but I think it's just a well put together track that I always find myself liking more than I think when listening.
I swear though, Lake Adeyoha is easily one of the best here. it could jump it's way up to my number 2 at this rate
