There isn't much I don't like on Fortress tbh. Spoils, Dissentience, Limb from Limb and Goddess Gagged are the only ones I don't 100% love, but they're still fun. The rest is all killer

The two new songs, Dueling Cavalier and Gift Horse, are both great. I'd place them above Rivet and The Canary so I wonder how they made the decision which songs to keep. Dueling Cavalier in particular has some incredible vocal passsages.

Haven't been following the thread here since the album dropped. Today I gave it a good listen with the lyrics and all I can say is ''WOW''. An amazing album technically-wise, now has become an awesome and enjoyable album as a whole. Didn't expect the lyrics to be this cutting. I'm actually surprised that a prog band has such political lyrics, when the genre is burdened by esoterical, abstract lyrics, that sometimes can even be one word (I'm looking at you Katatonia and Leprous!)

Yeah myth, that's what makes this disc special. It's melodic af, amazing technicalities as always, yet strikes some great lyrical portraits that I didn't think PtH could do. I'm still listening to this on a weekly basis

Lyrics are on-the-nose 5th grade level history, with actual inaccuracies (like the date in the song about Baby Face Nelson) and a flawed presentist viewpoint. Yet I'm still in love with every other aspect of this band hence why I also spent almost 200 bucks on my pre-order package haha.

I didn't notice any flawed presentist viewpoint, tbh, but I wouldn't recognise the date mistake either. However, I do find it awesome that a prog metal band chose for actual commentary lyrics and present themes, and without ignoring your notes, I think that the whole concept is greater than the parts, especially given the amazing music, stunning cover art and of course, closing the album with one of the most devisive slogan in American politics, revised

I'll quote an older reddit comment that sums it up probably much better than I could right now:
"Rody falls into the trap of judging America's past based on modern values, and not the values of other countries in the world at the time.
So "Make America Great Again". It's among the first modern nations to abolish Monarchy. It's constitution has influenced pretty much all constitutions thereafter. While they used African slaves, there were arguably more European slaves in North Africa in the mid 1800's (hence, judge a nation based on the values of the time, not modern values). America was largely isolationist up until world war 2, and they were criticized the world over for not getting involved more.
In the 1950's, America was at the top of the list of most positive demographic statistics (life expectancy, low death rates, low infant mortality rates, literacy rates, etc). America had the most nobel prize winners at the time, etc.
America is no longer anywhere near the top of the lists in those categories, hence the slogan of "let's make america great again."
Of course, what Rody and many others have brought up is that America wasn't so great for minority groups during those "great" times. Well, that's true, but (again) is also true for pretty much every country. The world wasn't ready for "multiculturalism" and "ethnic equality" at a time when America was being founded by immigrants. So it was a bigger shit show than most for the simple reason that America was trying things that other countries wouldn't even consider.
Rody addresses this in Rivet with "No countries free of bullshit", but then laments that he doesn't like how proud Americans are, given their history of injustice. Well... the nation IS the most powerful superpower in the history of the world. If we took any nation/group of people, and made them the most powerful nation in all world history, I'm pretty sure they'd be proud, regardless of the horrible history they certainly had as they rose in power."
