if you dont like either of those albums i doubt you'll like vertikal

isis is nothing like cult of luna. they have a lot of midtempo moments and their music is often more middling in volume as well. not just either really quiet or really loud. they often groove and wander in their songs. i just find every climax so formulaic with cult of luna. mostly going by salvation though as that's the last one i remember hearing. i do really like amenra's mass v though, even though it's pretty much the same as how i described cult of luna. maybe it's the production on that that i love.

rosetta aren't like that either. they have a lot of more upbeat music and maintain the intensity for a lot longer. awake in sleep is another awesome post-metal band akin to isis. rituals is a great post-metal band -- they're like cult of luna but have gradual builds, not just obvious explosions.

Awake in Sleep are alright, but not that awesome

yeah they're nothing to write home about.
i just find every climax so formulaic with cult of luna.
then fix your ears or listen, don't hear, the music this time.
if you listen to their earlier records then maybe you'll understand their style and how it changed
throughout their works. just remember that post-metal never was meant to be post-rock with metal like
how it's wrongfully thought as /#postmetalmaster

'my problem with this band is they're so slow all the time and then just explode in growly heavy sludge. it's either quiet or its loud, but it's always slow. does vertikal change that up at all?'
'rituals is a great post-metal band -- they're like cult of luna but have gradual builds, not just obvious explosions.'
huh.. Finland?

too many to name
i guess we all like entry level shit and minty is too elite for CoL
|

*sigh* people always get defensive whenever someone has a negative opinion that doesnt agree with their own. its annoying. im not an elite postmetal fan, i only got into the genre very recently. im not dumb for having an opinion grow up people. was merely looking for advice on whether i should get vertikal cause this band still intrigues me.

Give Vertikal a try; Vicarious Redemption has a really extended built that's gradual rather than immediate and In Awe Of uses a decent dynamic range as well
|
| |
alright i will do. thanks for the cogent response. and as i said, im not a postmetal elitist, so if anyone has recs for me that are more along the lines of isis and awake in sleep (wandering and varied without such a constant focus on atmosphere and power) then send them my way

Well, if you haven't heard The Fire in our Throats... (Pelican), you should check that; all those songs wander a lot
|
| |
yeah i have that. not bad. defo more of the kind of thing im looking for. either way i just relistened to this and its nowhere near as dull as i remember. will up to a 3. it isnt just all obvious explosions; im thinking that might more apply to salvation. finland has nice postrock elements and dim reminds me of isis' weight. first track and the other slow folky one are both interminable and lifeless though imo.

Yeah this album took me a while to really appreciate. I remember having shuffle on and Finland came on and it just hit me. Loved it ever since.
And Minty, you'll probably like "In Awe Of" off of Vertikal. It never really slows down much and just flows perfectly. Probably my favorite CoL song.
